Defending champs St. Joseph’s, Visakha, Lyceum IS takes lead

The second day’s proceedings of the 48th Milo Schools Swimming Diving Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool saw defending champions in the three categories of Boys, Girls and Mixed Schools taking the lead.

In the boys category St. Joseph’s College was in the lead with 184 points followed by Lyceum International School Wattala (84), St. Peter’s College (63), Royal College (63) and S. Thomas’ College (51).

In the girls category Visakha Vidyalaya have chalked up 102 points followed by Lyceum IS Gampaha (78), Lyceum IS Wattala (75), Mahamaya Girls School Kandy (67) and Sirimavo Bandaranayake BV (47) while in the Mixed School category Lyceum IS Wattala was on top with 159 followed by Lyceum IS Gampaha (93), Stafford International School (52), Lyceum IS Panadura (49) and British School of Colombo (42).

Meanwhile A.I.M. Haathim of St. Peter’s Bambalapitiya eclipsed a record that stood for 28 years when he established a new record in the Boys Under 14 100m butterfly stroke event that of 1.2.89 to erase the existing record of 1.03.17 set by Gihan Ranatunga of S. Thomas’ way back in 1995.

Earlier D.Y. Mallawaarachchi of S. Thomas’ Mt Lavinia set a new record in the Boys Under 14 400m freestyle event with a new timing of 4.48.98 which eclipsed the record of 4.50.36 set by Amjad Hasan of Lyceum IS Wattala in 2016. (M. Shamil Amit)
