Former International Cricket Council (ICC) Elite Match Referee Roshan Mahanama is tipped to chair the Cricket Committee at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), Daily Mirror learns.

Fellow Cricket World Cup winners Aravinda de Silva and Muttiah Muralitharan have also been drafted in, with Ranjith Fernando, earlier reported to be a likely chair of the committee, not sitting on the panel.

It is learnt that since Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara are members the National Sports Council, they are likely to sit in Cricket Committee meetings on invitation.

The appointment of this committee comes on the heels of Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa meeting Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials last week and issuing seven suggestions – including the appointment of a Cricket Committee -- to be implemented by March 1.

The committee, as of now at least, will come under SLC, but it remains to be seen if the decisions they make will be implemented by the SLC administration.

Considering this, it is more suited for the committee to be answerable only to the Sports Minister, under whose direction this committee has been appointed, though it is understood that to do so there would need to be appropriate regulations made in terms of the Sports Law.
