Peradeniya Central College won the 47th L.V. Jayaweera Memorial Boy’s Boxing Challenge Trophy held at Urban Council Indoor Stadium, Kantale.
Nearly 400 pugilists from 89 schools in the island participated in this tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Association (SLSBA).
Peradeniya CC won four gold medals and one bronze to clinch the overall championship.
Kadugannawa National School clinched the runner-up position, winning three gold and two bronze medals. Koraboruwana MV were placed third.
A.W.A. Jayathissa of Kadugannawa National School was adjudged the best boxer of the tournament, and Zahira College, Kandy’s N.M.A. Rahman received the best loser’s award. In addition, Kavindu Praboda of Bandarawela Central College was adjudged the best upcoming boxer.
This is the first tournament in the Sri Lanka School Boxing Association’s 2023 competition calendar, and the L.V. Jayaweera Memorial Schools Girl’s Boxing Tournament is planned to be held in the first week of July, according to SLSBA secretary Jamitha Bandara. BY SUSIL PREMALAL
