South Africa players celebrate their win
South Africa have improved to fourth spot on the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings following their impressive win over Bangladesh in the first Test in Mirpur, Dhaka yesterday.
The Proteas improved their point-percentage to 47.62 with the victory, which helped them jump over New Zealand and England and take fourth place on the standings.
Bangladesh’s loss sees their point-percentage drop to 30.56 and they continue to languish in seventh place with India and Australia still remaining in the top two spots on the standings.
Needing 106 runs to win, South Africa had little troubles during their chase in the fourth innings, guided by Tony de Zorzi’s 41 and Tristan Stubbs’ 30 not out, taking the game by seven wickets.
Earlier in the Test, after Bangladesh opted to bat, Rabada, Mulder and Keshav Maharaj picked up three wickets between them to bowl the hosts out for 106 in their first innings. South Africa were reduced to 108/6 in reply before Kyle Verreynne’s 114 and Mulder’s 54 rescued the visitors, helping them finish with 308 to pick up a hefty lead.
Bangladesh were reeling at 112 for six in the second innings and while Mehidy and Jaker Ali’s record partnership led a valiant fight, they could only extend their lead to 105, which was chased down by South Africa with ease.
