Reshan Algama in action
By Shamseer Jaleel
Sixteen-year-old Reshan Algama ended day one of the 76th US Junior Amateur Championship on 154th position out of 264 leading golfers around the globe at the Oakland Hills in Michigan.
Most of the golfers are in the age group of 18 or 19 from China, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and China, Australia and New Zealand.
Algama’s place at 154th position with a six over par (76) is a noteworthy achievement. Despite the challenges posed by weather interruptions, including a stoppage of play exceeding one hour due to rain and lightning, Algama showed top-class skills.
This is especially significant given that players who completed their rounds in the first half of the day faced less adverse conditions and Algama being one of the youngest in the tournament.
Leading the way were Tyler Watts and Mark Edwards, both from the US, who have set the bar high with impressive five under par rounds, totalling a commanding nine under par.
Their top-class performances have created an 11-shot difference between their positions at the top and Algama’s position is at 154th.
The excitement builds with the anticipation of the top 64 Boys’ qualifying for the Match Play segment on the second day of the tournament.
