I am a target-oriented workaholic who is driven, precise and methodical, and always searching for opportunities to generate revenue for the property.
Tell us about the experience you’ve gained by working in Hospitality both locally and internationally?
After working in Hospitality for a very long period of time, it becomes ingrained in your mind. I am goal-oriented and disciplined, but I take a rather practical approach towards Food & Beverage Operations. This enables me to put together a reliable team that will be of the best possible service. Challenges arise on a daily basis, yet with a dependable team, you can always get through them with minimum hassle. In the short term, I always try to understand the role of relationships within teams in terms of strengthening and bonding, while trying to focus on developing as individuals for long-term personal career growth. It's a win-win situation for everyone on the team. I believe you can be an ambitious young person entering the hospitality industry, go through a rigorous career growth plan, and still remain true to your personal humble beginnings. You are only as strong as your team, whether it is local or international.
What are you planning to do differently to expand the operations at Cinnamon Grand having been appointed the Director of Food & Beverages?
The modern hotel industry entails far more than just providing accommodation and room service. You must provide your guests with an overall innovative experience by identifying their needs and expectations. Other activities may entice young travelers who normally spend less time inside the hotel. There are live concerts, poolside fun, fitness classes, spas, and special culinary experiences on the list. Boutique hotels are becoming increasingly popular and the travel industry is being dominated by a younger, more design-savvy generation. All of this suggests that you may need to make some interior changes to your rooms.
Clean lines and technology-friendly spaces are among the most desired characteristics of the millennial generation.
Having worked at many prestigious hotels in numerous countries, what differences do you see when comparing them with Sri Lankan 5 star hotels?
Sri Lanka, particularly Colombo as a destination and its properties, are distinct in comparison to other destinations, primarily in Asia; we in Colombo are resilient and have the ability to recover quickly from adversity. The service culture is the most important aspect of success in Sri Lankan hospitality; whatever infrastructure Sri Lankan properties lack is compensated for by the service culture.
