In a remarkable demonstration of community solidarity and commitment to a worthy cause, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka, H.E. Rohitha Bogollagama, recently convened an Advisory Council meeting at the Sri Lankan High Commission in London. The gathering brought together influential Sri Lankan professionals and representatives from various UK-based organisations, with the executive committee members of the Sri Lanka Leukaemia Foundation UK (SLLF UK) prominently represented.

The High Commissioner introduced the council to SLLF UK’s critical mission, which is devoted to supporting cancer patients in Sri Lanka, especially those undergoing treatment at the Maharagama National Cancer Hospital. With cancer rates rising and resources stretched, the work of SLLF UK has never been more vital. The High Commissioner underscored the urgency of supporting the foundation’s efforts, encouraging council members to champion SLLF UK’s projects and promote its mission throughout the UK’s Sri Lankan and wider communities.

During the meeting, Ms. Subi Perera, President of SLLF UK, delivered an inspiring presentation that detailed the charity’s history, objectives, and the vision for its future. She highlighted the launch of the innovative “£1 Campaign,” a new grassroots fundraising initiative aimed at strengthening community engagement within the UK’s Sri Lankan diaspora. The campaign aspires to mobilise individuals of all backgrounds to contribute to a united effort supporting cancer patients in Sri Lanka.

Additionally, Ms. Perera outlined SLLF UK’s plans to foster partnerships with UK-based corporate sponsors and professional bodies, aiming to establish the foundation as a key charitable partner for organisations interested in making a meaningful impact. These partnerships will enable SLLF UK to fund projects that significantly enhance the quality of life for Sri Lankan cancer patients and their families.

In a symbolic gesture of support, the High Commissioner, H.E. Rohitha Bogollagama, presented a generous donation to SLLF UK, consisting of proceeds from the sale of Sri Lankan handicrafts showcased at the Bedford River Festival. This donation marks the start of an important partnership between the Sri Lankan High Commission and SLLF UK, strengthening the foundation’s engagement with UK corporate and professional entities to build sustainable support for Sri Lanka’s cancer patients.

Ms. Perera remarked, “The High Commissioner’s support underscores our shared commitment to helping those in need back home. We are grateful for the opportunity to present SLLF UK’s vision to the Advisory Council and hope this meeting inspires others to join our cause.”

With its expansion plans now underway, SLLF UK invites individuals and organisations to participate in its mission.
