Herath spins Sri Lanka to series sweep despite de Bruyn ton

COLOMBO, July 23 (Reuters) - Theunis de Bruyn’s gutsy century went in vain as Sri Lanka completed a 2-0 series sweep after Rangana Herath spun the hosts to a comprehensive victory against South Africa in the second and final test on Monday.

The 199-run win, which came with more than a day to spare, was due to Sri Lanka’s tireless spin trio of Herath, Akila Dananjaya and Dilruwan Perera who together claimed all 20 South African wickets.

Such was their dominance that home captain Suranga Lakmal, lone paceman in their attack, did not bowl in the first innings and sent down only two overs in the second before withdrawing himself and watching his spinners run riot against the leaden-footed South Africans.

Resuming on 139-5 with a comprehensive defeat looming over them, South Africa appeared to have suddenly discovered a stomach for fight which was conspicuously absent in the series.

De Bruyn and Temba Bavuma proved during their 123-run stand that Sri Lanka’s rampaging spinners could be tackled with decisive footwork and proper application.

De Bruyn registered the first fifty by a South African in the series, which he eventually converted into his maiden test hundred, and soon there was another as Bavuma followed suit.

Thanks to their dogged defiance, South Africa had their first century stand in the series and they also breached the elusive 200 run-mark.

Both the batsmen generously employed the sweep shot to negate the turning ball but just when it looked like Sri Lanka would endure a rare wicketless session, Herath struck in successive overs to expose the South African tail.

The 40-year-old left-arm spinner drew Bavuma on the front-foot to edge a sharply turning delivery to Niroshan Dickwella behind the stumps. Bavuma hit four boundaries in his gutsy 63.

In his next over, Herath trapped Quinton de Kock leg before and struck the biggest blow when he uprooted De Bruyn’s off-stump after the batsman shoulder-armed to an arm ball. De Bruyn’s patient knock included 12 boundaries.

Dale Steyn was the last batsman to fall, holing out to Danushka Gunathilaka.

COLOMBO, July 22 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka’s formidable battery of tireless spinners bowled them to within five wickets of a 2-0 series sweep over South Africa as the tourists continued to struggle against the turning ball in the second and final test on Sunday.

Chasing an improbable target of 490 to level the series, the tourists finished day three on 139-5, their highest total in the spin-dominated series, at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.

Theunis de Bruyn was batting after a gallant 45, showing the kind of application and positivity that were lacking in his colleagues. Temba Bavuma was on 14 at the other end.

Sri Lanka resumed day three on 151 for three, an overall lead of 365 runs against a South African side who have yet to score 150 in the series, and decided to allow Angelo Mathews to bat himself into form.

The other overnight batsman Dimuth Karunaratne continued his strong run of form to score 85, his fourth 50-plus knock in as many innings, before falling to Lungi Ngidi.

Mathews made 71 before being dismissed by South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj who finished with a 12-wicket match haul.

Sri Lanka captain Suranga Lakmal soon declared on 275 for five, before unleashing his three-pronged spin attack who blew away the top half of the South African batting line-up.

Dilruwan Perera enjoyed an eventful 36th birthday as he first spilled Dean Elgar and then twice dismissed the opener off no-balls before the finally sending him back for 37.

Rangana Herath bowled Hashim Amla with his drift and turn and Akila Dananjaya struck double blows when he dismissed South Africa captain Faf du Plessis (seven) and the scoreless Maharaj off successive deliveries.

Lakmal, the lone paceman in the Sri Lanka attack, did not bowl himself in the first innings and has yet to roll his arm in the second as his spinners wreaked havoc against the leaden-footed South Africans.

Keshav Maharaj returned the second best figures by a South African bowler in a test innings but Sri Lanka took a firm step towards a 2-0 series sweep after thoroughly dominating day two of the second and final test on Saturday.

South Africa’s spin frailties were laid bare once again as the tourists collapsed for 124 to concede a first innings lead of 214 runs at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.

Sri Lanka, who made 338 in the first innings, were 151-3 at stumps after deciding not to impose follow-on against the tourists who now stare at the possibility of a second successive test defeat inside three days.

Dimuth Karunaratne was batting on 59 at stumps, his fourth successive 50-plus knock in the series, with Angelo Mathews on 12 at the other end.

For South Africa, left arm-spinner Maharaj took his match-haul to 11 wickets but his team were in dire straits.

Earlier resuming the day on 277 for nine, Akila Dananjaya and Rangana Herath frustrated South Africa with a dogged 74-run stand for the final wicket before Maharaj struck when the latter was caught behind for 35. Dananjaya remained unbeaten on 43.

Maharaj’s 9-129 is the second best by a South African in tests, behind only Hugh Tayfield’s 9-113 against England in 1957, but his success brought little cheer to a side battling their own spin vulnerabilities.

Herath and Dananjaya (5-42) returned from the innings break to harm South Africa with the new ball, reducing the leaden-footed tourists to 15 for three.

Dilruwan Perera (4-40) then joined the rout as South Africa lost all 10 wickets to the Sri Lankan spinners.

Faf du Plessis (48) and Quinton de Kock (32) counter-attacked but it was not enough as the tourists once again failed to reach the 150-mark in the series.

Kashav Maharaj returns splendid figures leave Sri Lanka reeling

By Champika Fernando

A lion-hearted spell of spin bowling from Keshav Maharaj helped South Africa contain Sri Lanka at 277 for nine at stumps on day one in the second Test at the SSC grounds.

Maharaj finished with a career best of 8 for 116, almost single-handedly running through the Sri Lankan batting order despite hosts showing some resilience with the bat early on.

Sri Lanka, who went to lunch with a commanding 93 for no loss, had three of their top batsmen returning to the pavilion in quick succession before tea with spinner Maharaj claiming all these wickets.

Sri Lanka decided to bat first and reached tea at 168 for 3 with set batsmen Dimuth Karunaratne (53), Danushka Gunathilaka (57) and Kusal Mendis (21) back in the dressing room after Maharaj changed the course of the match.

Karunaratne, who was in excellent form, reached his 16th career 50 plus score—his third in the series having notched up a century and a half century in the opening Test in Galle. He shared 116 runs for the first wicket with his aggressive opening partner Gunathilaka, the best opening stand for Sri Lanka in 21 innings and first 100-run partnership in Sri Lanka in eight years, before Maharaj stepped in.

Dananjaya top scored with 60

Angelo Mathews became only the ninth Sri Lankan batsman to reach 5000 Test runs but was never in command during his brief stay. He became Maharaj’s fourth victim soon after tea. Mathews was sharply caught by Faf du Plessis off at first slip as Sri Lanka left reeling at 169.

Dhananjaya de Silva and Roshen Silva then shared 54 runs for the fifth wicket but Kagiso Rabada, who bowled with great pace and accuracy, had Silva’s stumped rattled to end a promising partnership. He was soon followed by Niroshan Dickwalla where a miscued sweep off Maharaj ended up in the safe hands of Du Plessis at slip. It was Maharaj’s fifth five wicket haul and there was no stopping the young man who trapped Sri Lanka’s top scorer Dhananjaya de Silva leg before to end his defiant innings of 60.

Dilruwan Perera became his seventh victim of the match before Suranga Lakmal was brilliantly caught by Markram at short extra cover to add to Maharaj’s impressive wicket haul. South Africa had kept their faith in the renowned pace attack which includes, Dale Styen, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi but it was Maharaj who was the cynosure of all eyes as he bowled magnificently to leave the hosts reeling.

Rangana Herath and Akila Dananjaya survived six overs before stumps on day two. Sri Lanka leads the series 1-0 and with three spinners in their rank stills go out as favourites when the second day's play begins tomorrow morning.
