Shippers’ Academy Colombo completes five years

The Shippers’ Academy Colombo (SAC) known as the school of business for global commerce and logistics has completed five years in operation in Sri Lanka in January 2016.

In 2010 the concept originated in Singapore where Singapore Shippers’ Academy which was established with the support of International Enterprise (IE) Singapore to build capacity and skills of Singaporeans. 

IE is the government agency driving Singapore’s external economy. They promote international trade and spearhead the overseas growth of Singapore-based companies to grow globally competitive companies.

Since its launch in 2011, Shippers’ Academy Colombo has actively engaged in industry developments and today its contribution plays a pivotal role in the trade, logistics and shipping industry locally and is in the process of stepping into expanding in the South Asian region.

Shippers’ Academy Colombo CEO Rohan Masakorala, said: “We don’t do capacity building in a traditional manner. We think different to make a difference. In fact we operate in a different model than in Singapore as Singapore is a mature economy. Today technology helps us a lot to deliver education and knowledge, but we do customise programmes. Mr. John Lu Chairman of the Singapore National Shippers Council helped me a lot to get the SAC going and running, it was his influence and guidance that gave us the successful start.”

SAC has about 30 part time lecturers from the trade with great experience who conduct classes and training  at Sri Lanka Foundation, BMICH, SLIDA, JR Jayawardena Centre, and IHRA of University of Colombo. 

SAC also closely work with government institutions and partner them in training and also help develop government’s policy with our practical and academic knowledge input.
