Chain snatching Police Constable nabbed

A Constable attached to the Cinnamon Gardens Police who was alleged to have snatched a gold chain valued at Rs.80,000 from the neck of a woman who had come to the Vihara Maha Devi Park with her family and used it to fund his gambling habit, was nabbed by Civil Defense Force personnel on Wednesday night.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday ordered the Police Constable to be remanded till April 20.

The victim of the chain snatching, Nilanthi Perera of Maligawatta Flats, Colombo 10, had arrived at the park with her husband and two children. The police had launched an investigation into the incident following a complaint lodged by her on Wednesday.

Two CDF personnel who were on duty at the park had gone in pursuit of the suspect and had apprehend him and taken back the woman's chain.

According to the Cinnamon Gardens Police, the suspect PC had committed the crime as he did not have enough money for gambling.
