11 jumbos killed in 36 hours: Ven. Ananda Sagara Thera

During the past 36 hours a total of eleven wild elephants had been killed due to various man made incidents, Surakimu Sri Lanka Organisation chairman Ven. Pahiyangala Ananda Sagara Thera said.

Addressing the media today he said trains operating on the railway track through the Galgamuwa area should be driven at a speed of 20 kmph.

If the night mail train had been driven at the given speed limit, the elephants would have been saved, the thera said.

"If 20 kmph is not enough to stop according to the given speed, it should have been driven at 15 kmph. But the train had exceeded the given minimum speed limit," he said.

While mentioning the recent six jumbo death as a tragic situation, the thera requested the relevant Wildlife office to take immediate legal action over those involved in the incident. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
