20 injured in bus mishap

At least 20 passengers had been injured when a bus skidded off the road, knocked an embankment and toppled on the Nuwara Eliya Road this morning, Police said.

They said at least 40 passengers were onboard on the Welimada - Colombo bus when the accident occurred and that the injured had been admitted to the Nuwara Eliya hospital.

Police said the injured were not in critical condition. (Hatton Ranjith Rajapaksha)

Something needs to be done against the "Speed Demons" to ensure safety of passengers. Imagine if it had gone down a precipice at that elevation. Thank God that passengers had received only minor injuries. via DM iPad app

These bus fellows in our country think they are F1 drivers. I'm pretty sure the only race these guys know are the ones Dilantha takes part in. The damn bus drivers don't have common sense on center of gravity... Atleast drive according to the size of vehicle. Sigh. Due to their negligence, the passengers pay the price. via DM Android App

This raises immediate safety concerns for the passengers. The way the bus has been toppled, the passengers would be trapped inside the bus, as both doors are on the other side of the bus. Buses must be designed with emergency exits on the hood of the bus as well as on both sides of the bus.

I recall an incident some years ago on Galle Road near Hikkaduwa, where a bus was toppled in the same way. Unfortunately the fuel was spilled and a fire spark caused the fuel to ignite killing all the passengers as both doors were facing down, trapping the passengers inside the burning bus.

all due to wrong road architect - road not wide enough to - negotiate a curve or no provision to turn left or right ...in the event of emergency to avoid accident. Law enforcing officers too vigilant to arrest the wrong drivers in addition make more cases - from the weak infra-structure - motoring public pay for it........RDA.... no sign board is visible in the photos? if not make awareness arrangement....before the next accident occur.
