200 monkeys stranded in reservoir

A troupe of about 200 monkeys was stranded in an islet in the middle of the Lunugamwehera reservoir for three weeks after the water level was increased.

Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon of the Uva – Central Zone, W.A. Dharmakirthi had taken steps to provide them with food and rescue them after receiving information from the fishermen.

It was reported that the animals had been stranded there for three weeks and had faced severe food scarcity.(Janak de Silva)

I used to live near Udawattekele and these monkeys used to come to my garden and eat everything I had planted .I did not mind it because I quite enjoyed the antics of the groups that visited my garden.They ate all the mangoes,papaw, bananas etc and ate the banana plants too!So I had to buy everything!You cannot blame people like Vijith because everyone does not know how to enjoy nature like we do :)

Its heartless for someone to say, leave the monkeys to die. From our childhood we are taught to love animals. We have a Wild Life Society, a Wild Life Department and charitable organizations who support wild life. We are a part of nature. We have a duty to protect our wild life,wild animals and the forest land and their habitat. I hope the relevant government departments will act without delay to save the stranded animals and provide food until such time thy are free to roam on their own.

Its shocking that rare and stupid species like Vijitha still exist in the world in this time and age. Hope his type of species goes extinct sooner than later. In the meantime, may the monkeys gain all their glory! :) :)
