22 Indian fishermen nabbed with 3 trawlers in Sri Lankan waters

Colombo, March 10 (Daily Mirror)- The Sri Lanka Navy has apprehended 22 Indian fishermen along with three Indian trawlers while poaching in Sri Lankan waters off the Kovilan Lighthouse in Kareinagar.

The Navy said they were arrested during a special operation to chase away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters last night and this morning.

They said the seized trawlers togethers with 22 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings.

With this recent apprehension, the Navy has seized a total of 15 Indian poaching trawlers and 110 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters in 2024,the Navy said.

The Navy said they continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing trawlers, taking into account the impact of those practices on the livelihood of local fishermen.

This is a daily happening and our leaders have no back bone to speak about this with the Indian premier and let him know that if any fisherman from India intrudes our water and any Sri Lankan who intrudes Indian water will be punished according to the law of the land.

Now watch the sequence of events that will transpire, the clowns in TN will protest and falsely accuse that our Navy is harassing their innocent fisherman while conveniently disregarding the fact they have boldly ventured all the way to Kareinagar violating international maritime law, well past the normal hot spot excuse of Katchatheevu islands, the government will then once more, succumb to repeated political pressure across the ditch and release the perpetrators, and it will be business as usual. The only losers once again, will be our Northern fishermen.
