The 22nd Amendment to the constitution was approved by a two- thirds majority in Parliament shedding a few powers of the Executive President.

Some 174 members voted in favour of it during the third reading while no one voted against it.

One member abstained from voting.

The curse of SL was the executive presidency born out of power greed from JR and this has been the curse of modern SL. Too much of power without checks and balances is residing with a single person. Not withstanding this, there is no debate in parliament before a decision is made. Given the abject failure of this system please remove the Executive Presidency for good of SL and the future generation.

Yes it was passed ,specially the clause which states that the president could dissolve the parliament after 2 1/2 years Which was very bitter to the people expecting the eligibility for pension rights and also enjoy the perks and privileges in the parliament for another 2 1/2. Only After the leader of 134 made the announcement that the parliament wouldn’t be dissolved before its full term the boys were happy to raise their dirty hands. So what does it means these corrupt lot never care about people whom they represent and whose vote they came to this carnival of diyawannawa.

Good, but more needed in the constitution to tackle corruption, waste, to have independent judiciary and police and many more. Recovering monies from corrupt politicians and businessmen should be embedded into the constitution. It is very sad and disgusting to see all those involved in sugar, garlic, coal, fuel scams as well as heads of CEP, CPC, Ports are all free to roam and continue their corrupt businesses.

What a mess. This amendment will never solve the ethnic problem. It’s the elephant in the room. SL is going backwards. We will never learn.

Vow….! What a win win situation……. Raise had to 20th one and put some money in pocket and then raise hand to 22nd also and gain some public support. Why not an amendment or for every MP that they have to declare their wealth at resuming their duty as an MP and resigning from MP.

Piecemeal tinkering of the Constitution has no meaning. Sri Lanka should go for Westminster model of parliamentary democracy to bring in more accountability.
