30 to 35 percent turnout in Jaffna

A voter turnout of about 30 - 35% was recorded in Jaffna by 10 am at today’s Northern Provincial Council election and election monitoring bodies have claimed a lack of enthusiasm among voters during the ongoing Provincial Council polls held in the all three provinces.

Meanwhile, Provincial Elections offices released voter turn-out figures as of 12 noon a short while ago.

The figures are as follows: Nuwar Eliya 30%, Matale 45%, Kandy 40%, Kurunegala 45%, Puttlam, 35%, Kilinochchi 29%, Vavuniya 24% and Mannar 30%

In Jaffna this time more enthusiasm than the previous elections. People are in Queue for voting. More than 75% turnout reported in a single polling booth in Nallur division.

Do you remember one of the recent elections where at the counting it was found that the number of votes polled was more than the number of registered voters of that electorate? If I remember correct, it was some polling division in the NWP. So what then do the above mentioned percentages mean at all ?

Whatever it is, at the close of polls the percentage would definitely go up with all sorts of stuffed ballots and then the winners will be decided through a computer Jilmart. So much for elections in this country.

Perhaps we should make the process more 'user friendly'. Why not ask only those who believe in democracy (even at the risk of their lives) to turn up?
On a more serious note academic sociologists including those poorly paid University Teachers should start studying the phenomenon of poor voter turnout. Is it fear, a sense of helplessness, disillusion, apathy or accepting the dictates of our karma that influence this behaviour?
