306,000 mines cleared

More than 306,000 mines have been cleared and destroyed by the Army Field Engineers, in a land area of 1863 square kilometers so far and demining using mechanical and manual methods are still continuing in the North and East, Military Spokesman Major General Ubaya Medawala said.

He added that over 1300 soldiers have been deployed for demining activities in Jaffna, Mannar, Maullaitivu, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Pollonnaruwa and Vavuniya Districts. (Supun Dias)

This is the stark reality Sri Lanka has had to contend with and resolve. The formidable struggle to clear minefields is still ongoing more than one and a half years following the conclusion of the terrorist war. What naturally comes to one's mind on reading this news item is the seemingly complete lack of knowledge of this problem and its magnitude, displayed by some countries in the west and their so called human rights organizations. How many of them ever reckon the presence of this monumental problem when they kept on issuing harshly worded statements critical of the Sri Lanakan government, demanding the prompt settlement of IDPs?
