The wildlife department has reported that a total of 400 wild elephants have died this year.

They said nearly 200 of the wild elephant deaths were a result of conflicts between elephants and humans.

Many wild elephants have died in shootings and road accidents.

Meanwhile, wild elephants are also reported to have died due to various diseases.

The department said that there are about 6,000 elephants in the country.

Due to the loss of habitat due to human activities, there has been an increase in elephant attacks, the department said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Sad, how many people were killed by the elephants? How many more will starve due to the loss crops? Who will compensate the farmers whose crops were destroyed by elephants? How much have the governments spent to prevent this recurring disaster?

Whats happening is settlers (illegal and legal) are taking over traditional elephant habitats for chena cultivation as well as commercial purposes. Thus the elephants in search of food are moving towards the human habitats in search of food. Elephant habitats should be marked and fenced off. The other one is elephants being knocked down by trains can be reduced by creating animal crossings, underpasses below the lines where the line are passing through elephant habitations. Also rail lines should have protective fencing to avoid human accidents too.

They didn't die. They were killed! Imagine the carcasses of 400 elephants piled up. What kind of society is this? What kind of people? Trumpeting all day about Buddhism and Ahimsa and then this! No tourist should set foot of this sinful 'paradise'. Feel sick in my stomach.

Until these magnificent gentle giants will be free to roam the jungles of Sri Lanka! this cannot be prevented. It is necessary to start with the process of reforestation even in areas like Hingurana sugar plantations and taking action against deforestation by the government, it self like Walsapugala, etc. Annually, there are over 100 people killed by elephants and those can be captured and domesticated, before being killed along with other male elephants which damage the properties of residents. It is the only practical solution as of now till the previous forests are given back to those creatures with enough and safe elephant corridors. The shortage of staff of the wildlife department is another issue needed to attend to, urgently.
