62 suspended CEB employees reinstated

A total of 62 employees who were suspended for protesting against the privatisation of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) have been reinstated.

This decision follows an order by Energy Minister, Engineer Kumara Jayakody.

The CEB has also taken measures to acquit the employees of all charges, reinstate them to their previous workplaces, and release them from any penalties.

Additionally, the penalty requiring the payment of eight months' arrears in salary has been removed.

Minister Jayakody issued letters of reinstatement to these employees yesterday (24).

The trade unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board had protested in January, alleging that there were plans to privatise the organization.

Then Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera had instructed officials to take action against employees who participated in these protests. These actions included suspending those who refrained from performing their duties, which caused inconvenience to consumers, despite electricity supply being declared an essential service.

All suspended and reinstated employees are JVPers who ruined the country. This JVP protested every initiatives of previous regime - few among the many are: protested to start private medical colleges, trade union actions (ports), rahging in universities, etc

JVP together with trade unions in ports, electricity boards, transport created a lot of problems then to the ruling parties. They pioneered to change governments. Foreign powers funded them a lot. Every time port was on work to rule, all the ships went to India for re-fueling. They even used students to protest and create lot of issues in the country. Now finally after a very long time, thanks to covid19 and economic downturn due to covid and lots of debts they are in power. We are yet to see their work. Will a team who created a lot of issues in the country will be able to make wonders?

This sends the wrong message. Even if the new government is associated with the trade unions, it is unacceptable for employees of an essential service not to turn up for work. If the new government has now decided not to privatise the CEB, which I believe is wrong, it should find a way to dismiss the 70% redundant employees for the benefit of the customers.

Starting from this episode, The government should stop all new hires for now unless it’s to replace those who are resigning. As many are aware, most government agencies are overstaffed. As such, don’t replace those who are retiring and use the existing employees plus AI Technology to take up those responsibilities where possible. Provide some allowances where necessary to sweeten the deal!

Atrocious decision! This decision will pave the way for others to use this as an example and evade disciplinary action. When employees of a government entity disrupts services to consumers they should be punished without mercy if the government is in power to serve the people.

This is a stupid decision and sends the wrong signal. Doesn't CEB have enough staff, in fact, more than enough? These workers always demand more and more money. Slowly this government is going into disaster. Another one was Vijitha Herath disregarding the court ruling from Australia imposing a penalty on payment of wages to a domestic servant by that woman in SL embassy. Stupidity gone mad. They do one good thing and then many bad things. That's not what they preached. People have begun to loose trust in this government.

Every employee has the right to protest in order to safeguard his or her institution for which he works. That is a right enshrined in the labour law. No one has the right to remove such a person from work for carrying out his fundamental right. This is a good move.

STRIKES ARE HELD AROUND THE WORLD IN MANY COUNTRIES DUE TO UNIONS GOING ON STRIKE AND OR PROTESTS DOUGT THEY SACK THEIR STAFF FOR PROTESTING, THEY HAVE LIMITATIONS OF WHERE STRIKES CAN BE HELD AND BOTH PARTIES GET BACK TO NEGOCIATIONS.
