All presidential candidates should show the public their apparent qualifications, whether they engage in public debates or not, former Minister Navin Dissanayake said.
"All presidential candidates, be it A/L,s degrees or masters/professional qualifications, should show their qualifications to the public. We cannot have mere talkers crashing this country after an amazing stable recovery," Dissanayake said in his latest post on X.

Is Dr. Mervin Silva educated than an A/Ls student?

No problem Mr. Navin, in case SLPP Namal contests he is not eligible as he does not have GCE (OL) and Weerawansa too the same, but all others Sajith, AnuraKumara etc., all have bagged lot of Professional Qualifications.

Having worked for over five decades as professional in seven different developed countries my personal take is, Qualifications is a means to an end. A first class pass out OR a PhD does not mean he /she will do better than the next man/women. This has been well demonstrated by the former CM of Tamil Nadu and Congress Chair Kamaraj (a year 5 educated person). However, a comprehensive education means one has the capacity to talk the talk and make up his/her mind independently while listening to the advice of others.

@Rajan: But in the UK. The Prime Ministers are often from Russell group universities. Education makes people to have a qualified vision. Karmarajar, Karunanithy and zMGR didn’t study much but only the 1st one had acted honestly and so listened to educated officials which other two were corrupted.

Recovery didn’t come from wealth generated by this government, only through loans from the IMF. The West destabilised the country to cut our relationships with China and when a pro Western president is appointed they decided to support him and agreed with massive loan. So, this economic recovery is Synthetic.

What an amazing recovery? Talking rubbish. Even a person with a basic education can run this well without coming to power through back door with the help of rouges. Who was the leader of government when the bond scam took place?

Bandu Sunday, 14 April 2024 03:37 AM
Ed qualifications are not all that great to do a good job especially politics.. Scoring at exams by repetitive memory as in SL and some countries as against the US system by assignments, must be considered. Ranil is there not because of his LLB but by political manoeuvring and cunning. Some "educated" leaders like Bandaranaike and Jayawardena have done more damage to us.

Strong confident people do not talk about their qualifications or how great they are. If you do not have authority over the people who do not have qualifications don't try to change their behaviour because it is none of your business. People brag about their qualifications for many reasons wanting to be liked as there is a feeling of insecurity, missing empathy having a false pride. Great people without qualifications have achieved many a milestone. The secret to success is your attitude in anything that comes your way only people with inferior complexes want to be on centre stage of attention!!!!!!!

People vote for the party the candidate represents This is the trend in Srilanka, normally if the government in power is unpopular even the government presidential candidate is a professor still he will loose, , Srilankan's are not politically matured, same thiefs, tugs are elected to the parliament.

More important is public knowledge of their assets and liabilities in Sri Lanka and overseas and also their immediate family's assets and liabilities. One of the most successful Treasurer's and Prime Ministers of Australia was Paul Keating and he had passed only his eighth grade. Media should shift the emphasis to knowledge, wisdom, honesty and accountability and not given space to those who do not advocate these qualities

IN POLITICS SOME OF THE EDUCATED AND UNEDUCATED BOTH KNOW HOW TO GAIN ILLGOTTEN MONEY. THE UNEDUCATED IN MOST INSTANCES WORK HARD AND GET RESULTS, WHEREAS THE EDUCATED SIT PRETTY LIVING THE HIGH LIFE AND GET OTHERS TO DO THEIR WORK AND DIRTY WORK, SO THEY ACHIEVE VERY LITTLE.

Education does not stop with a few letters after the name ..learning is from womb to tomb they say ..So much to pickup about ideology and adaptation to be a person to think of others before self ..that makes a leader a noble President . ..Jose Andres who led the World central kitchen could inspire others to care for led by example not mere rhetoric. ..thundering words in English , twisting words like a words smith does not make a leader ..but a mere words smith ..

We should not elect candidates if any of their family members had amassed wealth in a corrupt way while as a politician. Family members include father mother, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother etc. This wealth can be in western capitals and they can be living on these incomes. Please screen all candidates reviewing their past. This is more important than qualifications because we saw in last government how many highly qualified politicians cheated the country.

All politicians should be made to spend their own money to build the country, we don't need monkeys with wrenches to come and tell us what they'll do with public funds. If the voters had common sense and true patriotism, and zero racial hatred, they would have fought for people like Upali Wijayawardane and Sir Lalith Kothalawala. We practice the take but hate policy

Do we need educated and qualified presidents and politicians to ransack the country?? What we need is those who love our Motherland, who has common sense, and understand the down trodden masses need, and avail a fair living standard to all. Not the so called educated Rouges, Fraudsters, and Crooks, in white cloths, who are power greedy and selfish.

The problem with Sri Lanka's disastrous economy is the lack of education of several ministers who hold high positions in government but don't have the necessary qualifications and the lack of the english language to communicate with the rest of the world.
