Alleged abduction and assault of SLIIT student Colombo HC orders to arrest Ex DIG Vaas Gunawardena’s wife and SI Indika



  • High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja issued the warrant for the arrest of the two accused who are the first and the sixth accused in the case being observed that the accused were not present in court yesterday for the trial
  • Further trial postponed for September 28

Colombo High Court yesterday issued warrants for the arrest of former DIG Vaas Gunawardena’s wife Shamali Perera Gunawardena and Ex SI Indika Pushpakumara for absconding court yesterday in the case against them for allegedly abducting and assaulting a student of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) Nipuna Ramanayake in August 2009. 

High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja issued the warrant for the arrest of the two accused who are the first and the sixth accused in the case being observed that the accused were not present in court yesterday for the trial. They were earlier released on bail.


The Attorney General had filed indictments against eight accused including former DIG Vass Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Vaas Gunawardena, his wife Shyamali Priyadharshani Perera and five police officers Indika Pushpa Kumara, P.D. Priyankara de Silva, Y.M. Lakshman Thilakaratne, D.M.S. Sandun Dissanayake and Saman Vithana who were attached to the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) at the time of the incident .-They were indicted under 13 counts including the abduction and assault of Nipuna Ramanayake.
