Animal lovers eager on Parliament to pass Animal Welfare Bill

Colombo, July 8 (Daily Mirror) - Animal lovers across the country are eagerly anticipating the passage of the Animal Welfare Bill in Parliament, Veterinarians for Humane Management of Animal Population Association said.

The association's advisor, Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara, told the Daily Mirror that animal lovers and supporters of the Animal Welfare Bill have been advocating for it since 2000.

He explained that the bill is balanced and addresses issues raised by the meat and dairy industries.

However, it will not negatively impact the meat industry; rather, it focuses on the safety and welfare of animals. This bill does not pose any harm to the mentioned industries, Dr. Nanayakkara stated.

"This bill was delayed to ensure a balanced and problem-free solution. However, the animal welfare commitee held several discussions with parties involved in the meat and dairy industry, perahera occasions and all the animal welfare organisations," Dr. Nanayakkara said.

The Animal Welfare Bill is scheduled for discussion in the Cabinet tomorrow (9) and will be debated in Parliament on Thursday (11).

Therefore, animal lovers are eagerly waiting for this bill to be passed.

Moreover, the association has previously stated that they will only support parliamentary members who back the Animal Welfare Bill.

They also emphasized that animal welfare is not just a responsibility but a testament to our kindness towards animals.
