Another elephant hit by train last night

An elephant had died after being hit by the Menagaya night mail train, which was travelling from Batticaloa to Colombo Fort last night.

The Railways Department said this incident took place between Welikanda and Poonani railway stations at around 10 p.m.

They said another elephant died three days before after being hit by the Pulatisi train at around 9.15 p.m. at a place closer to the current incident. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarwickrama)

Not many people use these night mail trains. Occupancy is probably less than 25% beyond Maho junction. Why not just discontinue these night services and provide an alternative bus service instead?

Divide the entire Sri Lankan regions through which the railway lines pass through into three categories by grading them as High elephant movements, Moderate elephant movements , and None. And instruct the locomotive drivers to have their level of alertness and the speed of the trains depending on how the regions are graded with extremely slow journey when crossing through “ High elephant movement”. This would obviously add to the journey time but the chances of hitting elephants become very much reduced .

It looks as if the SMS system is not effective! CGR Should clear the land between the railway tracks to approx 250M bothways, and fix Thremal detectors on locomotive engines! This will give a clear vision on elephants near railway tracks at a distance which is more than enough to apply the brakes to prevent hitting the elephant!

This cannot be stopped until there is an early warning system to alert the drivers along with a driver training program and hefty fines. The useless SMS system introduced by the WLC has NOT save a single elephant. More than 50 elephants have died in colliding with the trains within the past 2 years.
