Absolutely senseless talk from the Election Commissioner. It's sad that he needs a Tamil translator in this office, as he apparently doesn't speak Tamil or doesn't speak it well enough. Very interesting that the born looser Ranil is not present. As clear-thinking people have advised him, that he should not have run for president but should have retired honorably from politics. Now he is being beaten away like a mad dog.

If RW had retired honorably the election outcome would be very different and we would have a president with a clear majority in the first round. An eelam sympathizer is concerned about the language skills about the election commissioner but the fact that a translator was used is commendable.

Sri lanka is not a Tamil country like Tamil Nadu elamist and their western dreamers know that North or East or trincomalee belong to Sri lanka Sri lanka is sinhalse country and others live under privilege only. Citizenship of elamists is temporary, any government can null it at any time

Tell us one country where all the officials are required to now more than one language by their work requirements. For a long time in Sri Lanka people have this social order given to proficiency in English. This has led to knuckle heads being appointed to important positions in public and private sector who happen to know English. This is one of the main reasons that Sri lanka has not developed towards an innovative knowledge based economy

Trying to understand your point? Election commissioner took the correct step in using both important languages and what issue you have in that. I am glad he didn’t use English.

Let's hope this landmark election marks a new era and the end of corrupt / savage politics that engulfed the country for 76 years that eventually led to its bankruptcy driven by Rajapakses (at the forefront being the most corrupt and criminalistic) followed by Sirisenas, Premadasas, Bandaranyakes, Jayawardenas, and Wickramsinghes and their cronies. Hope all the perpetrators will be brought to justice under the new government upholding the independency of judiciary for the first time in our history.

Let's hope a new chapter will begin for all communities to live in harmony and honor. Sadly, nobody keeps their promises after coming to power. Let's wait and see if AKD is different.

AKD requested the support of Sajith while doing party politics, separately as the country has faced economical and political crisis as they are not that capable to handle all alone. So, Sajith agreed on the sake of 22 M people of Sri Lanka. He will be the PM hereafter, till the next presidential election to have proper discussions and investments for SL with IMF, Bond holders, etc. and have 0% debt restructuring on EPF and ETF loans.

Congratulations ADK. In my view, ADK has two options (i) build on from what RW left behind or (ii) try to take your election agenda forward but that will possibly run the country into chaos worse than Gota's scenario. Good luck..!

Just get it going, president AKD you have to do few things that's tangible to people, before the general Elections, and the voters could vote overwhelmingly majority at the next general Elections.

The result is ultimately no surprise to me! I had expected AKD to win, although I preferred another candidate! The majority of people simply want something "different in general" and believe that better times are now beginning with the old Marxists! Let's wait and see what really happens! AKD has promised a lot: a general reckoning with the corrupt old politicians, the elimination of corruption in general, fair tax policy, investment incentives for the economy, combating crime and drug problems, etc. !!! Let's wait and see what the country looks like in two years! I do not believe in the success of Marxist-socialist politics, and I also doubt Anura Kumara's ability to be president !!! I just hope for the people of Sri Lanka that Sir Raimund Popper's statement that "the (socialist) attempt to create heaven on earth has always only produced hell" does not become reality !!! After all, AKD has announced a new era of politics in the country with very good future prospects!

Such a great responsibility at such a young age. But he represents the future. Anura, please become fluent in all three languages. They are all your fellow citizens or internationalist. As a young man you can do it. Congratulations and best wishes to you for a fair government. Swinging too far to the right or to the left or as all the previous leaders done since 1956to focus on ethnocentrism will only harm the country. Karma is the Newton's Third Law of Motion: For every action/force in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction. We saw that in beautiful action with Aragalaya -- the struggle, போராட்டம். It took nearly eight decades for a n equilibrium

Congrads Mr President AKD hope you improve our country. Well done Mr Sajith for accepting the result like a gentleman. Well done for bravely contesting Mr Namal. You did your campaign decently. Well done Mr Dilith for first timer you did well. Now let us forget blaming, arguing and fighting and make this the best place in the world. This is a paradise with every resource. All countrymen should work honestly. A president cant make you honest.

I am writing this after watching an extremely tiresome and a long talkfest aka election commissioner’s ’vote of thanks’ and the new president’s and the new runner up’s surprisingly short replies. Both these gentlemen were not there when the country was burning. That task was left to another guy who slowly but surely brought it back to some kind of normalcy, relieved the burden on people a little and set it on a growth path. If not for him this election wouldn’t have been possible due to utter chaos. But what did he get in return? A veiled dig for not having some insignificant local elections and giving some small relief to the already suffering government servants! I congratulate you Mr (new) President on your victory but surely you could have done better on your predecessor!

Congrats AKD, let's build the country together without corruption and racism. Let's move forward it is high time we sri Lankan should be able say proudly that I am a sri Lankan. Rest of the Asian countries well ahead of us. Security and integrity is important to every sri Lankan. If we can not change now , then it will be a never changing country and people will lose hopes of this country. Only rubbish will be left.

Congratulations! His leadership is much needed at this critical juncture. If he is truly a leader for all Sri Lankans, he should distance himself from figures like Douglas Devananda (EPDP) and Thondaman Inc. to free the people of the North-East and Upcountry from corruption and exploitation. These individuals have remained in power for too long, like leeches benefiting at the expense of the people. They are very wealthy by corruption, yet no one is investigating them. It’s time for the new president to impartially investigate all corrupt ministers.

Congratulations AKD! Sincere hope is that you can bring about the changes Sri Lanka desperately needs for the betterment of the country. Especially a full stop to the cancerous corruption in the government. Steps could be taken to embed Ethics and Good Governance in every aspect of our society. Schools can be use to educate our younger generation on ethics as a first step in this direction.

There's some millions of people thaught this day will Never come. There was some people who was bootlickers of RANIL. Tell me how many times The voters have REJECTED RANIL!?? If you keeping a count it's 30. Yeah that's how elections RANIL has lost. RANIL is the last person who's genuinely want to HELP LANKANS. RANIL WANTS ONLY power and title. RANIL became president because he agreed not to prosecute Rajapaksa clan for bankrupting this country And for mega corruption in return he wanted SLPP support to become president.

At least stop criticism, Anura because all this time you are used to criticising others, and you became president not because of performance, but by criticism as well as weaknesses of other politicians . Accusing others wont make you a winner. You are not a winner yet, just elected as president. Be mindful of that, Anura and co
