Colombo, September 22 (Daily Mirror) - After the Election Commission announces the NPP presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the winner of the 2024 presidential election later today, Daily Mirror learns that Dissanayake will take oaths as the new president at a simple ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat tomorrow morning (23)..

An old German saying goes: "Among the blind, the one-eyed man is king." In my opinion, as a foreigner living in Sri Lanka, this result is the best solution for the country. It has happened just as I predicted. I hope that AKD will keep his promises and also house the corrupt politicians, family clans and officials in state lodges. However, I think that my hopes will not be fulfilled and the war criminals will be handed over to The Hague.

We should NOT allow foreigners like Socrates to interfere in our sovereignty... That is the reason for our debacle. We are being so nice to everyone which leads us to bad situation

What an immature comment! The debacle is due to the result of our own internal forces NOT external.

old wine in new bottles Sunday, 22 September 2024 03:32 PM
Every time as SL vote a new president or new government, there is soo much hope. But after the end of a tenure there is much more corruption, inflation, crimes, economic downfall etc. So I have no hope, there will be much of change for the next 5 years. Its allways the same old wine in new bottles.

You are not even able to make a comment without a translation program, which is evident from the fact that in your comment Sokrates is spelled with a c. Without foreigners like me, who are runnning several companies in Sri Lanka for 30 years and know Sri Lankan politics very well, this country would completely collapse economically.

Still he is not the winner. so probably second count of votes may even change the winner. Though postal votes had an almost a and slide victory foe AKD, he has not being able to secure majority in most districts and just manage to get above 50 percent in few districts. Still major districts are pending and day dreaming is bad. Lol

Time is moving concepts are changing. This seems the best happening for the suffering Sri Lanka. Let's hope for the best. Somehow we have to come out of the tunnel through sheer commitment, honesty and sans corruption. Hard work , it will take time. We as public do have to help in the process by being disciplined and adjust as best as possible. Of course there will be pessimists and leg pullers as usual. Let us move forward as one country with amity among all communitied. Leadership is vital.

@Politics If he is a humble and simple President, then we should not call him Excellency and other big words, he has been voted by the people to serve the people, to serve all Sri Lankans, for the good of the country. We should get away from idolizing politicians, they are just human beings, that are there because of us, for us. If they don't do what's best for the country and for us we have the legitimate right to question, to protest and to send them away because they no longer represent us. To already assume he's going to be the best President that we don't yet know, the moment men have power and authority a lot can change, we need to give him time to prove he can run the country and that he has a valid team of experts to counsel and support him. And we as Sri Lankans should stop giving away ridiculous impulsive comments, but rather make informed choices and and have constructive conversations.

Its high time we sri lanka forget all our differnce and work hard to bring our country back. All should unite. Like the famous saying by the founder of Singapore who once said "Do what you can do for the country rather asking what the country can do for you" !!!. As a new chapter and history of our country is being rewritten, we sincerely pray and look for a better future for the next generation. We need to "Work Work Work" That is the only Mantra, no short cuts. Why can't we unite and develop a small and beautiful country like our's when our big neibhour could achieve with a huge population, why can't we. Yes We Can Sri Lanka - Time to bury our past and look to the future.

There are no war criminals here but those who violated human rights. But then again, that's there all over especially now as you can very clearly see with Israel, US, and several EU countries as well. As a German, you can see what has happened to your own country with bad immigration policies as well isn't it?

Congrats to Anura for the resounding victory. Good luck. Every citizen who voted him to be our President for the next 5 years, wants him to fulfill all the promises made in NPP's manifesto and take the corrupted politicians to books, ease the sufferings of the poor, take measures to bring down the COL, which will benefit the ppl and Senior citizens who live on pensions and little savings. Take all measures to recover the looted money from the country, Bond scam, arrest culprits of the Easter Sunday attack, take over the govt dwellings occupied the former politicians etc. Respect all religions as all communities voted for you in this election. We pray to God that he should guide you in every path to take this beautiful country forward with the support of all parties. We are with you.

Tall order to Anura Sunday, 22 September 2024 07:25 PM
After congratulating Anura, you have given tall order. I wonder whether Anura can accomplish them with only three seats in the house. This election will be seen as child's walk when thinking of the jobs to be done. Everytime you talk of punishing the rogues and confiscating the looted wealth, there will be very big war. Do you think, the looters will welcome you with garland? This is why Ranil was very cautious on this issue, not that he loves Rajapaksas. But we named him as Ranil Rajapaksas. That was our limit.

Congratulations . I accept the popular choice of the people who voted at a democratic and peaceful election. I congratulated in this same manner in 2019 and went silent for 6 months, but this time I won’t. All are watching! Especially all those who voted for you expecting a ‘rich and prosperous’ country! Remember, it’s not the head who matters , it’s the people. System change won’t happen unless people change

The country has important issues , eradication of corruption and poverty, implementation of a fair tax system , law and order, political appointments , increase productivity , Use of automated services , retrain Army in useful ways rather than protect the politicians houses and wives, improve health care , make sure all pay the uni fees after starting work and Aged care.

Nobody is taking oaths until second preferences counted, possibly third. Likely Sajith will win, though not much enthusiasm for a second place candidate that two thirds of voters don't really want. But them is the rules.

Where neither AKD nor Sajith crosses the 50% cut off point after the allocation of preference votes, then there will be no winner in this election to be declared.

Brother, you truly deserve this victory. I've been following your journey for a while. If this were the tale of the tortoise and the hare, the tortoise has ultimately won. You worked tirelessly in the beginning to educate the masses, and you’ve come a long way, slowly but steadily. I hope you can now lead Sri Lanka toward a brighter future.

The result is ultimately no surprise to me! I had expected AKD to win, although I preferred another candidate! The majority of people simply want something "different in general" and believe that better times are now beginning with the old Marxists! Let's wait and see what really happens! AKD has promised a lot: a general reckoning with the corrupt old politicians, the elimination of corruption in general, fair tax policy, investment incentives for the economy, combating crime and drug problems, etc. !!! Let's wait and see what the country looks like in two years! I do not believe in the success of Marxist-socialist politics, and I also doubt Anura Kumara's ability to be president !!! I just hope for the people of Sri Lanka that Sir Raimund Popper's statement that "the (socialist) attempt to create heaven on earth has always only produced hell" does not become reality !!! After all, AKD has announced a new era of politics in the country with very good future prospects!

I wish for him to become the next president of Sri Lanka, and we should extend our best wishes. Since there are no longer individuals holding them back, as was done in the past, I am hopeful they can lead the country into a new era. Despite their many lofty promises, I trust they will prioritize responsible fiscal management aimed at balancing the budget. It’s important to note that they heavily criticized their opponents before the election, alleging theft of public funds, embezzlement, and other wrongdoing—claims that often seemed exaggerated. I believe they now have the opportunity to substantiate these allegations in court and ensure accountability for any misconduct, imposing the maximum penalties the law allows. If they fail to do so, history may judge them the same way they were brought into power. Best of luck to all Sri Lankans.

Given the high level of hostility between candidates only a small number would have used their second and third preferences. The lead is 1.3 million. For it to be bridged at least 50% of Ranil's voters should have used their second and third preferences to Sajith. Mathematically impossible. The number of second and third preferences by voters who voted for Namal and the TNA candidate will likely set off against each other. Had Ranil and Sajith joined together before the election there'd be a clear winner.

A little too early don't you think? As for the people who says one person didn't get over 50%, wasn't it a foregone conclusion that no one would get 50%? Specially when you have 3 main candidates unlike other times. Unless you want to go through another election we have to bow out heads to the majority after the second preference counting.

As all district results are released, AKD has a clear lead. Probably the 2nd and 3rd preferential votes will not make much difference as sjb leadership failed to promote 2nd preference vote. Now AKD you promised a lot and please deliver them as soon as you take auth. Reduce electricity bill by 30 percent. Make payee 200000 instead of 100000. Increase government sector salaries every 6 months, remove vat from all essential stuff, give loans without guarantors pls.

Mr. Sokrates, UN war crimes investigations depends on who they are dealing with. For example the destruction of Libya in which UN also participated will never be investigated. The destroyers themselves are now facing the repercussions with wave of immigrants coming at their doorstep

Congratulations. However the biggest worry is the map showing the electorates won by AKD in red and those by SP in yellow. It shows a worryingly divided country. Unifying this divided nation is a priority for AKD as he has been elected with much less than a majority of votes. Without building a strong centralised state in which every citizen believes in, although they may not see it as perfect, is the key expected result of AKD presidency.

I don't understand how people can vote for JVP after their history in the country. I also don't understand the historical obsession of SL political parties with Marx, Lenin, Trotski, etc. This is all ancient stuff. We've seen what those theories lead to in practice. Yes, Sri Lanka needs a change and need to feel like the people have a voice and some control, but the island also needs stability. It's easy for populists to be persuasive and make promises, but can they deliver? Will they be easily bought by Russia and/or China? How does one know the extent of Russian interference so far? Even though the stability and pro-Western stance of Ranil would be most beneficial, Sajith would probably be the best middle ground for the country, especially given the need for some sort of change and democratic election. The preferences seem to show something quite different to round one. Is this suspect?

Not only a political party in a small country like Sri Lanka, but powerful countries and religious institutions have had bloody pasts. Sometimes much bloodier. Human civilization have come this far by leaving behind those black spots in history and embracing the future. So it is simple to understand: Sri Lankan voters have done something different and embraced the future left the past behind. Only the time will tell us the rest.

Acting was superb, but the reality is different Tuesday, 24 September 2024 08:27 AM
For the first time in history, a man with a lowest voting percentage became the president. Couldn't even pass the benchmark required. He and his henchmen must stop pretending to be the most popular party in the country.

I congratulate Rt Honourable President Anura Dissanayaka for winning most of the Sri Lankan votes without uttering a single word about communal hatred, and it is a good sign that Sri Lanka will become a developed South Asian country in a few years. He should appeal to all Sri Lankan intellectuals and businesses who continue to contribute, by giving incentives to come and serve their motherland. All retired expats, in thousands, should be encouraged to retire in Sri Lanka so the Foreign Exchange reserve will increase month by month. He should concentrate on improving the dollar reserve to meet future commitments. He should prioritise educating children via English Medium to compete internationally and encourage tourism like Maldives. All islands in the north should be connected via seaplane, and should be encouraged to be built, and tourist facilities improved. Indian Tourists should be encouraged to visit Hindu and Buddhist religious sites with special adverts so it will improve
