Appeal Court President’s issue an isolated incident: Minister

COLOMBO (Daily Mirror)- The incident regarding the Appeal Court President Justice Bandula Karunaratne is an isolated incident and does not reflect the conduct of the entire judiciary, Minister of Justice Wijedasa Rajapaksa told Parliament today.

“Some members of Parliament did make comments on the Appeal Court President in the House on Wednesday and it has been reported in the media. This has disturbed those in the legal fraternity. However, this is not an attack on the judiciary by the legislature. The legal fraternity should take this matter into consideration,” the Minister said.

“However, one should note of a substantive motion to talk of judicial officers in Parliament. Impeachments have been brought against some judicial officers. Impeachment motions were brought against Chief Justice Nevil Samarakoon, Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva and Shirani Bandaranayake,” he noted.

All the disturbed legal fraternity and the BASL in particular must take it upon themselves to clean up the corruption within the judiciary and the legal fraternity. Many of you are well aware that there are not so clean judges, corrupt registrars, fiscals and other court officials and also deal making lawyers who sacrifice cases (clients) on swap basis, tax evasion and many bad things that happen within the profession. We citizens do not need to see you cleaning your dirty linen in public but you lot must have a stigma created where the profession reforms or disposes the bad eggs. If not one fine day you will find us citizens coming out in numbers to do an Aragalaya (protest) at Hulfdorf against the corruption and manipulations within the professions of the judiciary. Don't weaponise the notion of contempt of court and use it as a shield to cover your rotten members.
