Colombo, August 13 (Daily Mirror) - Approval has been granted to implement projects for the installation and maintenance of solar panels on the roofs of stations and buildings owned by Sri Lanka Railways (SLR).

Addressing the media, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana said there are more than 300 railway stations owned by the SLR.

He mentioned that a large number of railway stations in the Northern, Eastern and Southern Provinces receive significant amounts of sunlight throughout the year, making it profitable to establish rooftop solar panels at these stations.

He also stated that it is appropriate to initiate a project to generate electricity by installing solar panels on the roofs of the stations.

Accordingly, approval was granted to implement the project as a public-private partnership.

The proposal was presented by the Minister of Transport and Highways.

Typical colonial slave mentality . Did British build railways in China or Japan too ? How are they more advanced than British? The British made their colonies to produce goods and services including some slaves for them. Now they are hammering those who went to live in their country from their former colonies.

All public buildings, unused lands, and lakes can be utilized as solar farms, connected to the national grid. This will help reduce costs associated with coal purchases and promote the use of green energy.

This idea has been opposed by CEB Engineers for technical reasons saying that the Grid cannot take varying loads of electricity. Some accuse them of delaying mega solar project for loss of commission from private electric companies.

If solar energy is harnessed proper, our energy needs will be sorted! Also it’s high time to start thinking of solar harvesting equipment waste management. Or we will find panel pieces dumped on the road after taking off aluminum and copper wiring.

Need to set up a maintenance outfit at each installation. Without that the panels will gradually break and malfunction beyond recovery, like ALL equipment, machinery and buildings in Sri Lanka.

is it big deal to announce ? - solar panel is very common method - I remeber its was banned by on the Minister ( long ago) - you can see level of curruption and how behind we are even comparing under developed African country - " Only Pada Show for few familes "

From everything the railway needs this was the last thing. They should invest in trains, in better sinalization, in cleaning the trains that look disgusting,and all the rails and bridges with no maintenance. Not solar panels.......

Let the Sun Shine: Do not let a photon go to waste without benefit to mankind.... Good move by Sri Lanka Railways... Solar Power, if properly harnessed can provide electricity for few cents..
