The army officer who was seen assaulting a civilian at the Yagghapitiya Petrol Station has been relieved off his duties with immediate effect by Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage until the probe is completed and a 5-member Court of Inquiry recommendations are received.
The army in a statement said that a parallel military investigation of the Sri Lanka Army Corps of Military Police (SLACMP) over the incident is also underway.
The Security Force Headquarters - West on Monday (4) appointed a five-member Court of Inquiry, headed by a Brigade Commander to go deep into the issue, related to this Senior Officer's conduct and make its recommendations, the army said.
The video of the army officer, who is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Sri Lanka Army, assaulting the civilian at the fuel shed went viral on social media yesterday, receiving much criticism from the public.
