Assault on student: Suspects released

The four old boys of Dharmaraja College in Kandy, who were arrested by the police yesterday in connection with the recent assault on a student of the same school, were released on police bail today.

They were released after the both parties came to a compromise and agreed to settle the matter.

Police and Education officials earlier had launched separate investigations on the incident. (J.A.L. Jayasinghe)

It is nice to see the settlement. But I have one question. IS this the calibre of the students of the famous Dharmarajah College? This brings lots of repute to the college, that is for sure.

The parties can settle among themselves only if one party had made the complaint against the other party. But in this case the Police need to file action against these thugs for unruly behavior in public, etc or in whatever such legal terms.

There is no way any person could be released after such an attack. This shows there is major weakness in our judicial system and police have to be blamed.

May be the victim was threatened that there will be more to come if the case proceeded. But Police should have pressed charges regardless because he was assaulted in front of a school/public place.

I am sure there are many people with a legal background reading this thread. What is the actual law . It the victim is willing to broome charges /cover things up is that the end of the matter even if the crime is criminal in nature.

This incident amounts to child abuse. No authorities can wash off their hands. We are civilized people. Do not let them go scotfree . Matured peoples must be taught to behave like matured. This sets a very bad example.

To reconcile with the enemy is lauded. It is a good thing. But the LAW trying to hide behind reconciliation is despicable!!!! Here remember the LAW does not need evidence, everything is on camera. It was a PUBLIC ASSAULT making the LAW a joke, it was done with knowledge of IMPUNITY!! I too believe this matter has been covered up.

Whether they were forced or not, they were assaulting in a public place and moreso in front of a school. They were not assaulting that boy in their grandmothers or your grandfathers garden.

This kind of thugs students must be sacked from the school. They are not suit for this kind of reputed school. School authority must advice their parents as well...good action taken immediately by the authority in this regard.

The persons who assaulted should have been punished for an activity of unruly behavior in a public place. Furthermore, whether they were old boys or not, they were seen assaulting a school boy in uniform which in decent society cannot be allowed. But then this is the banana republic called Sri Lanka and this incident happened in typical theoretical "Dharmaraja" manner.
