A BMW car, which was reportedly driven by a relative of a powerful politician, had ended up in a canal at Thalawathogoda in Battaramulla last morning after crashing into two other cars, sources said.
Eyewitnesses had said they saw the BMW car leaving a nearby night club around 6.00 a.m. on Saturday and crashed into two vehicles before plunging into the canal.
They also said two people who were in the BMW got into a three-wheeler and fled the scene.
No casualties were reported and the owners of the two damaged cars had lodged complaints with the Talangama police.
However, the driver of the BMW had not reported to the Police station until last night. The vehicle had been taken to the Talangama Police Station.
Meanwhile, reports said a person claiming to be a top official atatched to a vehicle sale company had apparently approached the parties to reach an amicable settlement with the owners of the two vehicles.
However he had not disclosed the name of the driver.

What they do not know is that the economy that was growing 6 - 8% from 2009 to 2014, recorded 3.1% in 2017 and 4.4% in 2016 - resulting declaration of 1.3% in just one year. Under CBK, since independence we experienced a NEGATIVE GROWTH in 2001. The Jaraapaalanaya will repeat it again.

These breed of politicians are completely useless. How can politicians who are not even able to raise their offspring rule this country?

Ministerial sons have enough money to fled the scene abandoning a BMW i8. I don't think a common Sri Lankan can even abandon a motor cycle like this.

Un registered with the plates from the car sales, take the owner into custidy so he reveals the guy whom it was sold to so the driver could be arrested. Probably a drunk driver who fled the scene. Will the POWERFUL minister let the law enforcement authorities to do their job without any hindrance? Get hold of the 3 wheel driver who took them to safety to provide more info,IF he knows

There should be a upper limit of value for the cars imported to Sri Lanka as the country is trapped in a financial difficulty. You don't need £100.000 cars in Sri Lanka. Has the governments got any brain to run this country. There were limits for engine size few years ago. The corrupt politicians have removed them ,so they and their children can enjoy beyond reasonable limits. The country has to provide spare parts for these cars as well.

Jaliya Monday, 19 March 2018 09:20 AM
Dr. If any person who wants to import any car of any value should be able to do so when the importer is in compliance with any applicable regulations. That's what makes many countries an open trade system a success. The issue is NOT the car its the DRIVER. There are too many idiots who doesn't know the road rules... safe driving and good manners. To make matters worst cops have been giving the blind eye to most of the traffic violators, that is the issue.

Actually, I think it is the duty of the president to instruct IGP to take up this matter personally and take necessary steps without delay and disclose to the public who is involved in this crime. The president should intervene in this because this is a matter where one of the ministers or his son is involved which reflects very badly on the Govt.and its reputation. Otherwise, this incident will be swept under the carpet as usual in such cases.

What is the problem? If one is lost today, will get a bigger and a better brand tomorrow. This is the attitude of the people who get freebies. If that person used his hard earned money to purchase that car, then he will be much more careful than this.

Sri Lanka should curtail the import of these luxury vehicles, There should be a top limit of the price of cars imported to our poor nation. This is disgraceful when the majority of the inhabitants are strugling to make a living, we see this type of wastage of our foreign exchange on useless ultra luxury cars being imported to this developing nation.
