Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus sworn in to lead caretaker government

August 08 - Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has been sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government.

Yunus, 84, took oath at a ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday night after weeks of student-led protests forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to neighbouring India.

“I will uphold, support and protect the constitution,” Yunus said during the ceremony, adding that he would perform his duties “sincerely”.

The key tasks for Yunus now are restoring peace in Bangladesh and preparing for new elections.

Bangladesh’s figurehead President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus for his role as chief advisor, which is the equivalent to a prime minister, in presence of foreign diplomats, civil society members, top businessmen and members of the former opposition party at the presidential palace in Dhaka.

No representatives of Hasina’s party were present.

Nicely done Bangladesh. Well done! This is what we wanted for Sri Lanka in 2022 but it was hijacked by the same rogues who systematically robbed our country and now we are taxed heavily to pay for their robbery and we the public are supposed to now praise the rogues for taking money from us to pay our creditors.

Yes, the system in Bangladesh is different in that President is dummy but constitutionally appoint the Prime Minster. Here other way around and that’s why Gota appointed Ranil as PM and the MP’s elected him as President.

Sri Lanka doesn’t have any Nobel laureates. RW is the best option. Also, prof Yunus has no political experience whatsoever and too old, 84 years,. Bangladesh will collapse into rubble. Just observe over the next two months.

well said Flack. It is the bitter truth. The very people who bankrupted the country are being protected by RW and he wants their support too to become President for another term. Any person with a brain should not vote for these people as they are continuing to put pressure on the general public without addressing the root cause for the calamity

By the age of 70, half the White folks ( men and women ) loose much of their memory. But look at Asians, even at 84 this Bangladeshi intellectual is full of vigour and vitality. We are blessed to have been born with dark brown skin.
