A beggar sleeping on the pavement in front of the Homagama Base Hospital had been burned to death on Monday night (29). A 27-year-old man from Galavilawatta in Homagama was arrested in connection with the incident.

The deceased, Perambuli Arachchige Dharmadasa (64), has been identified by his relatives.

Residents of the area who rushed to the scene had admitted the injured person to the hospital, but he had succumbed to his injuries last morning. Investigations revealed that the suspect had warned the beggar to have a bath or else he would be burned to death. On Monday night, he hurled petrol and set the beggar on fire.

I just wish this suspect, 27 yrs old man wouldn't meet the same death when he himself gets poor or old or sick or even be abandoned by his own kids in the future and spend time on streets. Never know if the deceased person was a real beggar but if his smell was the issue, such an unfortunate death. Everyone has the possibility to get poor or sick at any moment and old age, death is guaranteed, unless die early. We will be hated by our own children if we hate others due to such reasons while we are young. Still we can try to cover and hide or wash our dirt ourselves but time will come when we won't be able to, anymore, nature of body remains same, it's ridiculous to complain about others. There are fake beggars as well but it's another issue, we need to see ourselves in real unfortunate people on streets, better send best wishes at least in mind, it may help ourselves in the future, danger and cruelty of the world, is our own issue, not only for others.

If a beggar on a pavement doesn't bathe, there is a possibility that he may spread diseases to others, but it doesn't mean that the beggar should be killed in the cruel way. Sri Lanka's civilisation is at its peak.

Such incidents happen because the government does not have a proper implementation plan to rehabilitate beggars or look after them even though the social service department has some centers for them. Police should be empowered to arrest beggars and send them to such centers.
