Bus topples in Nanu Oya injuring eight

Nanu Oya, Feb 22 (Daily Mirror) - At least eight persons were injured after a bus carrying pilgrims to Sri Pada toppled at around 7.30 p.m. today at Nanu Oya on the Nuwara Eliya-Hatton Road, the Nanu Oya police said.

They said the injured were admitted to the Nuwara Eliya base hospital.

The accident happened when the bus was driving on a section of the road with a steep slope where vehicles were not allowed to enter.

The bus had arrived from Matara, carrying 34 pilgrims to Sri Pada.

The bus had tipped over since the driver could not control it. The Nanu Oya Police said it was fortunate that a serious accident was avoided because the bus had almost gone off the road but had not gone down the precipice.

Drivers from low counties must know how to drive in upcountry sides . They must take extra care when they drive on hills and in a narrow road. Why not the government give some guidelines on this

The answer my friend is "speed". I'm a bus driver in a foreign country and yesterday I had to do a route with a steep drop (the Riverview route). Guess what speed I was going at down this embankment? 10kmph You cannot control a heavy vehicle if your speed is excessive. I drive on the freeway at 80 kmph but there are times when I must drop my speed to 10. This is how I come home safely to my family. I don't pray before I go out on the road. I follow everything my wonderful trainer taught me when I was learning to drive a bus. When it comes to bus driving you cannot be complacent even for one moment.
