Businessman arrested for smuggling Rs. 10 million worth of cigarettes and whisky

Colombo, December 31 (Daily Mirror) - A 45-year old busniessman was arrested  for smuggling foreign cigarettes and whisky  worth Rs. 10 million, at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning by the Airport Police.

The suspect is a resident of Prince of Wales Road, Colombo 14 and frequently engaging in air travel for business purposes.

He had arrived at the Katunayake Airport on December 31 at 3:50 a.m. aboard an Indigo Airlines flight (6E-1164) from Bangalore, India.

The authorities discovered that the suspect had hidden foreign-made cigarette brands inside five travel bags.

Additionally, 125 bottles of imported alcohol brands were also concealed in the same luggage.

Meanwhile, the goods were intended for sale at liquor shops and restaurants in various provinces of Sri Lanka during the upcoming festive season.

The businessman has been charged with illegal import of goods and is scheduled to be produced before the Maggona Magistrate's Court later today.

Further investigations are being carried out under the supervision and guidance of the Katunayake Police OIC.
