CA orders transfer of Shashi Weerawansa’s case to another judge

The Court of Appeal today issued an order transferring the case filed against Shashi Weerawansa alias Udayanthi Ranasinghe, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa from the Colombo Chief Magistrate to any other Magistrate in Hulftsdorp.

In a transfer application before the Court of Appeal, Shashi Weerawansa had sought an order to transfer the case from the Colombo Chief Magistrate to any other Magistrate citing that the conduct of the Chief Magistrate was prejudiced.

The CID had filed a case against Shashi Weerawansa before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court for allegedly submitting forged documents to obtain two passports.

President's Counsel Nalin Ladduwahetty appeared for Shashi Weerawansa while Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Pieris appeared for the Attorney General.

On 27th of May last year, Shashi Weerawansa was found guilty to the first case and she was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 100,000 for obtaining two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

However, she was released on bail upon filing an appeal before the High Court challenging the judgment of the Magistrate's Court. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
