Colombo, December 6 (Daily Mirror) - Officers from the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) raided a factory in the Hemmatagama area in Mawanella which had a stock of bottled drinking water.

The raid was conducted by CAA investigating officers based on a complaint.

Investigations revealed that the registration certificate obtained from the Health Ministry had expired and it was obtained by providing false information.

During the raid, the officers seized 1,904 bottles of 500 ml, 484 bottles of 1 litre, 576 bottles of 1.5 litres and 34 bottles of 19 litres drinking water kept prepared for distribution.

According to the CAA Act, it is an offense to falsely claim a standard or endorsement that a business does not possess. Legal action will be taken against any establishment found violating this regulation, the officers said.

The CAA regularly conducts raids and investigations into such establishments that manufacture products intended to mislead consumers.

Very good find. CAA must also check from where the water comes from to fill these bottles and at randum check some bottles for the water quality

Don't wait for consumers to complain. CAA should conduct raids by itself. Throughout the island, adulterated food stuffs are sold. The only way to deal with the unscrupulous shop keepers is hitting heavily on their pockets where it hurts them.

Well done. Keep it up. This certainly could minimize health factor and pain plus expenses causes to the people. Also could cut down unnecessary budget spent on health sectors on monitoring right from the beginning. Health minister please keep an i on it. Wish to inform the Gen Hos Neurology unit Physio Therapy unit has been closed due to short of Drs. This means, students who also on training are not having the facility to do so. The government must allocate adequate funds to the CAA and ensure they have a process driven random checks method all island every month every important industry. The system changes NPP and the people are yearning for needs a bit of change management in our very badly undisciplined and even dishonest business environment as clearly seen in this article where false information has been submitted.

This should spread to Colombo too. A lot of the water bottles sold in Pettah and in commuter areas as well as in Galle Face are substandard and priced exorbitant.
