Parliament, March 20 (Daily Mirror)- The Constitutional Council members who abstained from voting when approving Deshabandu Tennakoon as IGP should resign immediately, government MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage told Parliament today.

"Those two members should not be in the Constitutional Council if they cannot come to a firm decision, MP Aluthgamage said.

"We request that the Constitutional Council be dissolved if its members continue to behave as they do now," he also said.

Obviously yes. They are paid through public funds to make decisions...not to abstain at crucial times expecting benefits at a latter stage. Even the present northern governor did the same at the election commission and got rewarded with the current posting....sic...

Legal Provision, Precedence for ABSTENANCE, is provided and available – Parliamentary Procedure!? IF NOT, Past instances of Abstaining, which is an Inalienable RIGHT, of every Members is DENIED then Governments, which SUSTAINED since 1948, would have been defeated, if "SUCH VOTE" was denied!!!??? Various "Throne Speeches and Annual Policy Statements by Presidents, POST Republic would have resulted in Defeat to Governments!? DSS, Dudley, Sir John, SWRD, Sirimavo et all!!??? HISTORY of this country would have been entirely different!!?? Some SCUMBAGS in August Assembly would have been, Long-Forgotten HISTORY, not imbibing anything PARLIAMENTARY!!???

Although MA has his own controversy, I fully agree with him. Members of CC main responsibility is to decide. and vote either way. In the CC, abstaining should not be a right, and hence such right must be removed. If any such member cannot abide by such procedures, they must resign.

Yes we want independent persons with high levels of integrity and proven track record of honesty and fairness to sit in the CC. Dr Pratap Ramanujam is a son of a ex MP and socialises with persons having strong political connections. I don't know whether this is a disqualification or not. Strong criteria should be established to select CC members.
