In what appeared to be a controversial development, the Constitutional Council (CC) scrapped yesterday the three-week service extension granted to Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickramaratne, but President Ranil Wickremesinghe installed him again within one hour, Daily Mirror learns.

The CC decision triggered a fresh controversy since it was done at a time when both the President as the Defence Minister and Public Security Minister Tiran Alles were out of the country.
There is a tug-of-war over the appointment of the IGP. Mr. Wickramaratne has now been granted service extensions three times.

The CONSTITUTIONAL COUNCIL is there only superficially and their decisions are not implemented as Ranil does things as he wants and disregards the CC. If the CC members are of high Calibre and not political appointees, they must maintain their self respect and resign.

Then why a constitutional council for name sake? Ranil could run the country as he wants.....and wait to see people vote as they want.

Deshabandu Tennekoon is not capable and not with a clean hand to be appointed IGP. Instead, few senior DIGs should be called for interview n one of them has to be appointed as IGP.
