CEB to introduce instalment payment scheme for new connections: Minister

Parliament, March 7 (Daily Mirror)- Steps are being taken to introduce a mechanism to pay the connection charge for new electricity connections through an instalment payment scheme, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said today.

He told Parliament that the proposal to introduce the instalment payment scheme has been approved by the Board of Directors of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and that it will be announced by next week.

Responding to an oral question raised by Parliamentarian W.H.M. Dharmasena, the Minister said the new system will allow consumers to obtain new connections after paying only 25 per cent of the total connection fee, which is around Rs. 40,000, and pay the rest in ten or twelve instalments.

Connection fee of around Rs 40,000.00? Sri Lanka is the poorest of the poor in the world, poorer than any other poorest in the world and the Minister talking about installment payments? Poor thought? God bless the poor people of Sri Lanka, which has been going downhill since independence.

Rule of thumb. If someone cannot pay the new connection fee in one go, they’ll never be able to afford the monthly bill! It’s not like it’s several 110k’s like in other countries. But for low income groups who will consume less than 30 units. The fee should be subsidized. But not for those who will pay connection in installments and crank a bill of over 200 units
