CID questions former Army Major over alleged threat during NPP rally

Colombo, September 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recorded a statement from a former Major of the Sri Lanka Army for allegedly making a threatening statement towards supporters and members of other political parties in a video posted on social media.

Police said that the investigations began after a Member of Parliament lodged a complaint with the CID on September 7, alleging that the individual had made the statement during a National People’s Power election campaign rally.

Several organizations have also filed complaints regarding the statement in the video.

Police said the CID has initiated an investigation and reported the findings to court. Court has ordered that the videotape be sent to the Government Analyst’s Department to verify whether the voice in the video belongs to the suspect.

The suspect, a 47-year-old, is identified as a former Army Major and a resident of Kiribathgoda.

Meanwhile, the National People’s Power has claimed at a media conference that the video has been manipulated, with a fake voice added to the original footage.

Police spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that the Computer Crimes Investigation Unit is conducting further investigations into the matter.
