Cabinet approval was granted to amend the Motor Vehicles Act by removing the tare weight, which should not exceed 500 kg, and the gross weight, Cabinet spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardana said.
According to the interpretation of the Motor Vehicles Act, the weight of a motor tricycle should not exceed 500 kgs, and the gross weight should not exceed 1000 kgs, he said.
"Electrically charged batteries are used to manufacture electric three-wheelers and to convert petrol or diesel-powered three-wheelers into electrically operated three-wheelers," the Minister said.
It has been recognized that the tare weight of such three-wheelers exceeds 500 kgs due to this reason, he said.
On August 8, 2022, the Cabinet approved amending the Motor Vehicles Act by removing the existing obstacle to the registration of electric three-wheelers.
The bill prepared accordingly by the legal draftsman has received the clearance of the Attorney General.
Hence, the Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the Transport and Highways Minister to publish the said bill in the Government Gazette and to submit it for parliamentary approval. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
