Cabinet approves salary increase for government employees

Colombo, August 22 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved a salary increase for all public servants, effective from January 2025, as announced today by the Expert Committee on Public Service Salary Disparities, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).

Accordingly, Committee Chairman Udaya Seneviratna stated that the salary hike will range from 24% for lower-grade employees to 24%–50% for higher-ranking positions.

Seneviratna further explained that the increments will be determined based on qualifications, experience, and current job roles.

This very unfair. We at private sector pay PAYE taxes to maintain inefficient and corrupted government servants. All private sector employees should vote against present government

Ranils way of bribing government workers for votes, upto 50%??? Who's gonna pay for that? The people already burdened with heavy taxes to upkeep the corrupt politicians, some people can't even afford food or utility bills, now we have to pay for ranils bribing of government employees for votes????

I doubt this proposal. We have 1.3 million govt. servents. Currently, Govt spends ~950 billion to cover government servants' salaries and an estimated additional 200 billion to cover the proposed increment. Also, they said the minimum increment would be Rs. 25,000. Simple mathematics 200 bln / (1.3 million public servants*12 months) is just Rs.12,800 on average. Or is this addition to the proposed Rs. 25,000 allowance?

This is a violation of election laws to even announce such decisions. When the public servants requested for a 20 thousand increase the were given only 10 thousand and now all of a sudden from where do you find the money to do so. These are are all election gimmicks which will never happen.

Npp has over 90% of Public sector support. So take the increment and enjoy. We at private sector are there to support you all with taxes. Ranil's policies are aimless and election oriented.Thete is no nexus between pay and work efficiencies. Pl go home by 21st

Number wises the public sector is excessive over 3-fold and burden to the country. Recent tax increases were mainly to maintain this group, if further increase their wages, again tax will be increase on the general public.

From where the funds are coming,!!?? The government is borrowing money to pay essential imports, and to pay for government employees. And to pay for fuel imports. This government doesn't have One million rupees to spare. The uneducated bastards don't realize where the government getting the money to pay salary increase And most importantly why at this Time!!?? Hello VOTERS, This increase will never happen. The government have no money. Even if am the head of government with One month for presidential elections I will announce every family will be given a Motor Car and all the rural folks will get a Trishaw from next year.

Private Senior citizens paid taxes while working for many years and still paying taxes on the little interest given on our FDs. This is discrimination. Government service should also be taxed accordingly as per the private sector. Even their pensions should be taxed. It is only then that they will also feel what it is to be taxed and loos on their earnings .
