Colombo, Dec.30 (Daily Mirror) - Cake sales in the local market have dropped to 25% during the festive season due to a lack of eggs for making cakes, the All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association (ACBOA) said.

The association's chairman, N.K. Jayawardana, told the Daily Mirror that though they had hoped for at least 50 percent of the usual sale of cakes it had dropped to 25 percent.

"We did not receive the eggs on time to make cakes. The eggs imported from India are still at the yards safe and sound, but none of the eggs were distributed in the local market," he said.

Therefore, the cake business was not successful during this festive season, he said.

All BS! Bakery guys purchased box loads of eggs from sathosa! But they price keeping the egg at 60/-. Same with kottu stalls and similar short eats. Can share photos of 35/- egg cases being loaded into Batta trucks and 3 wheeler!

Re above comment.The increase in the cost of living and inability of people with lower incomes to manage has nothing to do with family planning or number of children.In more developed countries they are lamenting the drop in the birth rate because long term it would lower the taxable number left to support the non working elderly(increasing number because they are living longer)It has to do with a country which is living beyond its means leading to increasing budget deficits resulting in more and more money being printed to compensate leading to an increase in money supply and consequently more money chasing the same quantity or less of goodsleading to an increase in prices.It is also a result of an inequity in wealth distribution due to corruption,tax system and so on.Short term solution is to provide a buffer to the poor, long term have to increase production
