Cannot ban big matches: Minister

In response to the call made by a group of Buddhist monks to ban school big matches, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam today said they cannot do so.

The Minister said the call was not new and there had been requests in the past as well to ban big matches.

“We can’t ban school big matches. It is not a practical move to tackle students’ undisciplined actions,” he told the Daily Mirror.

However, the minister said they have had a discussion with school Principals recently to take preventive measures to tackle possible violent incidents among students during the impending school sports season.

Minister Kariyawasam said they have given instructions to law enforcement authorities including the Police Chief to take action to minimize incidents which cause public nuisance during the big matches. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Well said Mr. Minister. It is more practical to bring discipline to all citizens and also the monks. We have seen them try to block vehicles new courts, stoning and climbing walls and gates. This is a disgrace and need to be stopped before it is too late.

Perhaps the monks should organise a few gangs of pathalayos (they may get advise from any pollie how this can be done) and beat the shit out of these unruly brats. That is the only way to stop this menace.

If the minister can't ban them, then do what is necessary to stop nuisance caused to general public by those who participate the so called "bag matches". Stop motor parades that violate traffic law. Remember that those who do not participate theses parades too have a right to live in peace.
