Colombo, Feb 04 (Daily Mirror) - Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith today urged Sri Lankan people to be courageous enough to handover the nation to a new class of leadership.
Speaking during a service held in Colombo to mark the 76th year of independence, Cardinal Ranjith said the current leadership class should be removed from power.
"Those who ruled our nation during the latter years have only thought of their future instead of the people's wellbeing. Therefore it is essential to remove this class of leadership and replace them with a new class of leadership," he said.
The Cardinal who compared the Singaporean leaders with the Sri Lankan counterparts said Sri Lankan leaders used certain sections of the population to capture power and safeguard power. Singaporean leaders brought, Chinese, Indian origin and Malay people together," he recalled.

Educate yourself before speaking. JVP has been in multiple governments. Anura was a minister under his best friend Mahinda.

No doubt he is absolutely correct, all too well understood by the voting class I suppose. The new clas of leadership, does he mean, Jathika Janabala wegaya of Anura Kumara Dissanayake or some onr completely new like Dileep Jayaweera's Mawbima Janatha Party or some different group. Can understand that he cannot be specific yet better 'innuendo'

Rev Sir…You are totally correct….Since so called Independence in 1948, most of the time, the country has been ruled by so called Royal, Thomian and Bishopian boys and girls. Outcome of their rule is a godforsaken, lawless bankrupt country. So it is high time for New Class of Rowdies to take over the destiny of their people from those failed boys and girls in ruling class .

Sadly the ‘class’ you are referring to has ‘Absolutely No Class’! We remember you during 2019 November elections! The country was dragged to the lowest levels after people voted for the ‘national security’ you preached! We Sri Lankans forget the past very soon.

Especially from 2019 onwards the ruling class which is predominantly dominated by one family and its extended members whipped up communal sentiments to capture the majoritanian community at the expense of the minority voters to consolidate their family bandysm power base but their family circle itself is mixed up with minority community, yet the unsuspecting 6.9 million people who voted them to power were taken for a ride plunging the entire country into bankruptcy and their vote base having been drastically eroded, will definitely elect a new class of leadership but will they deliver the goods is the multy-million dollar question.

Ranjith Sunday, 04 February 2024 06:52 PM
Very true we have to get rid of these ungrateful leaders soon as possible and elect a new class of politicians to rule our motherland , we should totally reject alliances formed by former parliament members of SLPP,MEP, and UNP members close Ranil. They crooks bankrupted our Country and brought suffering to the people.

Singapore had discriminated against Indian origin Sunday, 04 February 2024 08:50 PM
Cardinal Malcolm has no idea about the racism suffered by those of Ceylon/Sri Lankan origin in Singapore. Most have migrated to other countries or came back with the Chinese language first came into effect in Singapore. Malays are leaving too, Chinese in Singapore consider themselves above other races.

DO NOT MIX RELIGION WITH POLITICS Monday, 05 February 2024 05:51 PM
Not sure if your comment is relevant to the post above, which is to do with appointing a NEW CLASS OF LEADERSHIP AT THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS TO GOVERN THE COUNTRY, ONLY THEN WILL ALL THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINNNNNNGING THE COUNTRY TO ITS KNEES, INCLUDING ALL THOSE WHO USED THEIR POSITIONS TO FLEECE THE COUNTRY AND OR FEATHER THEIR OWN NESTS WILL BE BROUGHT BEFORE A COURT OF LAW. AS FOR CARDINAL RANJITH, HE SHOULD BE BUSY MAKING SURE ALL THE SO CALLED 220 MILLION SUPPOSEDLY FOR THE EASTER ATTACKS ARE IN THE HANDS OF THE PEOPLE AFFECTED AND THE FAMILIES WHO LOST THEIR LOVED ONES.

In the last election most religious leaders including the cardinal, directly or indirectly supported Gota. See what happened to our country today by hearing from religious leaders. Let the People of this country decide the future leader this time without any interference from the religious leaders.

The cardinal was speaking at a religious service held to commemorate independence it was not an address to the nation. And they (followers)are free to decide. That's probably a fair interpretation. On the other hand there are so many outside forces influencing SL politics in a significant way today to which we need to pay more attention

Very true but we cannot take a U turn we have to look for a moderate leader having the support of experience educated least corrupt a national strong party only choice is SJB, Let's defeat alliance formed by Ranil,Rajapakses and alliances formed by Lansa, Dilith, Maithreepala etc they all corrupt.

Absolutely correct. We now have to make a desperate decision to oust this cancer where political leadership is used for pleasure and amassing wealth. We also need to punish all those responsible for subverting democracy, corruption, negligence, and voting in parliament for against the freedoms of people.

NEW CLASS DOES NOT MEAN CHRISTIANS Monday, 05 February 2024 09:26 AM
A NEW CLASS OF LEADERSHIP DOES NOT MEAN A CLASS FROM FAITH AND RACE, IT MEANS DIFFERENT SET OF POLITICIANS OTHER THAN THE PRESENT VOTED IN TO SERVE THE COUNTRY AND ITS CITIZENS

Cardinal is more biased to political wisdom than divine wisdom, still hasn't learned the lesson even after bomb blasts in churches. There won't be any good class out of all corrupt classes that clergy is also a part, permit to bless sin and insist who are less sinful than his corrupt class to confess.

Religion and politics don't mix. Nor should they. Religious leaders should not give us their opinions as, regardless of which party is in power, they still get fed and housed and, receive medical attention when required. Your vocation is spiritual guidance NOT political interference. This country has enough of troubles without you contributing your 2 cents worth.

It was not a day for celebrating but a day of remembrance with several diplomats in attendance If it was somebody else's independence there was no need for you to conduct your pious church service. An absolutely stupid comment
