Catholic Church in Sri Lanka complains against insults on Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith

A claim made by Namal Kumara who was in the limelight after the Easter Sunday bomb attacks is at the center of another controversy once again after he lodged a complaint with the Presidential Secretariat with regard to social media reports on the conduct of the Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Ranjith.

The CID has recorded a statement from the Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Ranjith after National Catholic Communications Director Fr. Jude Chrysantha lodged a complaint with the Colombo Crimes Division (CID) with regard to the social media report. When contacted by Daily Mirror Fr. Jude confirmed that CID has recorded a statement from the cardinal.

Namal Kumara told journalists last week that a audio clip which is in the possession of former MP Ranjan Ramanayake talks about Cardinal Ranjith’s alleged conduct. He said this after lodging a complaints with the Presidential Secretariat. “My exercise is to defend the cardinal and not to sling mud at him,” he added.

Meanwhile Ramanayake when contacted by Daily mirror said he does not have any audio clip about Cardinal Ranjith. “I don’t have any audio clip about the conduct of Cardinal Ranjith. May be some interested persons have created one using artificial intelligence to sling mud at certain people including myself,” he said.

“I have never met Namal Kumara and did not give any audio clips to anyone and did not release any clip to social media,” he added.

Colombo Magistrate Court No 8 Tharanga Malwatte ordered certain YouTube channel and few TV channels to produce whatever clips which they possess that contain insults on cardinal. Fr Jude also submitted motion to courts calling for an investigation on the alleged insult on the Cardinal and the church.
