Colombo, August 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Measurement Units, Standards & Services Department yesterday warned consumers to be cautious when purchasing scales and measuring instrument from the open market.
Department Director S.N. Akuranthilaka issued a notice saying that various unbranded and unapproved measuring instruments are available in the local market, with many being imported through online services.
According to the existing regulations, weights, measures, and measuring equipment must receive prior approval from the department before being released to the local market, he said.
Reports said that various weighing and measuring equipment are being imported through online methods, and the public is urged to be cautious when purchasing these items, he said
Approved weights and measuring equipment must come with a pink verification certificate issued by the department, featuring the state emblem. Only such certified equipment is legally allowed to be sold, with a validation period of one year.
It is mandatory for these items to have an embossed lead seal with the month and year, as well as inspector certification.
Director Akuranthilaka also emphasized that using uncertified weights, measures, and measuring equipment is a punishable offence.
