Colombo, August 29 (Daily Mirror)- Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe is making certain statements on the economy to satisfy President Ranil Wickremesinghe, NPP politburo member Dr. Nalida Jayatissa said today.
He told a news conference that the Central Bank Governor, as a doctor and an expert in the field, must avoid making statements as wanted by politicians.
Dr. Jayatissa said this in response to a question raised by a journalist on the statement made by Dr. Weerasinghe that the country will have to face repercussions if it deviates from the ongoing reforms agenda under the IMF agreement.
"The Central Bank Governor, as a doctor and an expert in the field, must not utter what politicians say. He must state practical things while using his subject knowledge," he said.
Dr. Jayatissa said there were similar Central Bank Governors in the past where one Governor was convicted by the Supreme Court over the economic bankruptcy.

NPP must understand that not everyone agrees with them and entitled to their own opinion. CB governor is also a part of the team that worked tirelessly to bring the country out from the economic hell, to which JVP also contributed by their protests on everything and anything

But what Dr Jayatissa is saying is that a public servant should not get involved at an election time. These are his private view and not becoming of a CB governor to be partisan.

As the CB Governor he has a responsibility to warn the citizens, otherwise when the shit hits the ceiling, these three wheel drivers will question what was the CB Governor doing

Everyone unlikely to agree with NPP/SJB/Ranil policies. I listened to EC who was asked about CB Governor making statements. EC expressed the view that no public servant must issue statements on policies or any matter when an election is declared and refrain from making statements during that short period

CB Governer is a true public servant who stepped up when the country was in trouble when you guys were busy in burning public and private properties . Ranil says what the CB governor says. Have some respect for a man who sacrificed his comfortable life in Australia to come here. You guys were sending messages to the expats through your cronies not to send dollars to SL via banking system.

CB Governor is a good decent man but please remember he would never get a good position like CB governor in Australia. Probably, he would have had some freelance work despite having a doctorate from Australian National University and former alternate director to IMF. He could have avoided making this statement at this stage with an election around the corner. I think he spoke in good faith. But people want the NPP - thats what I hear from a cross section of people outside Colombo

TIME FOR THE GOVERNOR TO START LOOKING OUT FOR ANOTHER JOB, IF HE PLANS TO STAY ON IN THE COUNTRY. Friday, 30 August 2024 01:38 AM
MARK MY WORDS THE GOVERNOR'S POLITICAL JOURNEY WILL BE SHORTLIVED AFTER THE 21ST. LET US SEE IF HE RETURNS BACK TO AUSTRALIA OR TAKES UP ANOTHER POST IN A PRIVATE COMPANY AND CONTINUES TO REMAIN IN THE COUNTRY.

Hey Tissa, Nanda was deputy governor when James Bond Mahendran looted the central bank. Before getting prosecuted, Mahendran took sanctuary in Singapore and Nandalal moved to Australia. Then Gota came to power Nandalal returned to SL. He never sacrificed anything old man like Nandalal can't make a decent living in downunder. As a bureaucrat he can make More money in SL than in Australia.

Right. So if his thoughts align with someone elses, it means he is supporting that person? Maybe the reason he is saying that is because he is aware of how IMF deals with these situations in other countries. IMF does not care who is in power. They will provide the help needed if we are willing to help ourself. Thanks to their conditions, the economy is getting better. Slowly but surely. There is no overnight solution to this mess. Everything IMF wants is what everyone is having in their manifesto because that what our country needs. Reduce corruption and expenditure, increase income.

Nandalal is a strong stooge of the incumbent president he wants RW to remain in power until his demise Thus he is surreptitiously and informally wishes his master that RW may come to power again. But it will be terminated with a dream This man is not loving our mother land he is money greedy and power greedy person subsequently the presidential election Nandalal will become an invalid coin Whatsoever he will have to face unprecedented consequences what former governor Karbaral also faced

My goodness! Now, professionals can't air their professional opinions if such opinions are not to the liking of the NPP. Mr Jatatissa, Dr Weerasinghe is a top-class economic professional with a wealth of experience in the banking sector. He told the truth, though it can be a bitter truth to a naive and inexperienced person like you. If this is the attitude of the NPP, where they do not want to hear anything against their liking, imagine how they will deal with dissent once they come to power - typical draconian Marxist thinking.

Just because there are no queues doesn't mean the so called master RW has done a great job. Our economy is still fragile with mountains of debt and extreme corruption. RW has done nothing to reduce corruption because he is part of that system.

Fully agree with NPP statement, do we want the people to suffer with IMF agreement such as exorbitant taxes , there should be tax exemptions people cannot afford such huge costs instead we must increase productivity that is the solution of NPP and to renegotiate the agreement which is good CB Governer cannot utter such statements. if he gets revenue to the country without in the form of taxes country can be resurrected. We all citizens will donate 100/- to the government to gain revenue we can reduce taxes. We don't him to be the mouth piece of RW is selling the country and protecting rouges

True mindset of those supporting NPP, Donating Rs 100 by "we all" at what frequency? Hourly, Daily, weekly, monthly or Annually? "Who are these "we all". How do you collect? Or do you mean that people have to pay these to NPP cadres? This mindset clearly shows that these guys have no clue whatsoever about running a country. And also , does he understand what is meant by 'resurrect the country"?

how can you increase productivity with a bunch of lazy people who want everything free, do not want to pay taxes, are against, are against FDI and privatization and take to the streets during working hours instead of doing their work while collecting full salary and are against people who have worked and rich. Good example why is CPC incurring a loss and both CPC and LIOC sell fuel at the same price and LIOC has a fraction of the staff compared with CPC

Tissa you're neive to think that Nandalal a good guy. Here's the facts, when Mahendran looted Central Bank Nanda was the deputy governor And he knew Mahendran' s unscrupulous activities but he didn't want to be the whistleblower. Because he was stand to benefit from that. And he looked The other way. He Left to Australia to avoid prosecution for his part as deputy governor in the central bank Robery. Then he returned to SL to become a bureaucrat because he can make More money in SL than in Australia. As old fart like him can't make decent living in Australia.

The fact is that the CB Governor does not need to make such statements during an election campaign. That’s for competing candidates to do. His statement can be construed as supporting a particular candidate. NPP’s DR Harshana S at an economic seminar yesterday said that all government departments including CBSL will be independent under a NPP government. That is NPP policy. Most of the comments here are simply mudslinging by the usual cronies.

My goodness ! these are signs of hell fire that are coming out of revolutionaries who do not agree to opposing critiques and cannot accept the realities and the solutions to some extent most appropriate in a time when the country is facing bankruptcy. As the Governor of the Central Bank there is no necessity of curry favouring with any individual it is only to offer the best solution so that we could come out of this mess created by the Rajapakse Clan. These spokesmen only can talk but fail to see the ground reality and results that the bureacracy has done for the last two years to at least bring some solutions to alleviate the suffering of the livelihoods of the public. Yesterday a new Johnny of the NPP was bragging about tutoring engineers and predicting the results saying that the Sri Lankans living overseas will come to support them. It seems that the members of the NPP are in a dreamland not knowing that the Bells will Toll for the NPP at the next election!!!!

Unfortunately the NPP has very little understanding of how the real world operates. Dr. Nandalal as the Governor of the Central Bank has certain responsibilities to keep the public informed about the consequences that would occur if a decision is made to deviate from the IMF program. As the new Central Bank Act gives the Central Bank operating independence, Dr Nandalal doesn't have to act as the mouth piece of RW.

BanduXX Friday, 30 August 2024 12:11 PM

I'm truly saddened by financial literacy of our people. This country is never going to get out of this mess because people are so short sighted and greedy, from the little guy all the way to the top. But they loves to point fingers and blame each other saying "you got us in to this mess" with our reflecting on it to understand how we got here. Central bank has a dual mandate, which are low inflation and low unemployment. 2 years ago Sri Lanka didn't even have enough reserves to even make our ends meet, so we went to IMF asking for help and I guidance. The whole vision of IMF is to help countries get out hard situations like this, so had created a frame work to get us out of the mess, the idea is once we get through the program, we'll be self reliant (just like a training wheel on a bicycle). Also, if a country following IMF framework, that builds confidence on us in international markets and slowly we'll be able to borrow at reasonable rates at public markets (i.e. treasury bills).
