Central Bank officials summoned for special party leaders’ meeting next week

Colombo, Feb. 29 (Daily Mirror)- Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe and other officials of the Central Bank have been summoned for a special party leaders' meeting on March 4, Parliament sources said today.

"It is expected that party leaders will question about the recent salary increments given to the Central Bank staff, the Parliament media office said.

"The meeting on March 4 will be a special one as representatives of all parties in Parliament will participate," a spokesman from the office said.

The Central Bank officials are also expected to go before the Public Finance Committee on the same day.

At the beginning soon after his appointment as Governor, Nandalal may have been elated and felt boastful. However things have changed and now the seat may be uncomfortable as Nandalal is being summoned from all quarters to explain his actions. There can't be any acceptable explanation for the Salary Increases given to his staff in the present Bankrupt situation in the country. The whole country Is shocked that these leaders don't think of the overall position in the country before making such imprudent decisions.

Can the party leaders recind the increases granted to Central Bank employees? To be fair, the party leaders should ask the reason why the pensioner not considered for any increase, is this the way seniors are being treated by the bank management. Furthermore I wonder, whether the Central Bank is above the parliament to take arbitrary decisions, the 71% increase not granted in any Central Banks in the world, this action has propelled other Bank employees to demand same.
