Charith Asalanka set to lead Sri Lanka in T20s and ODIs

Colombo, July 22 (Daily Mirror) - Charith Asalanka, Vice-Captain of Sri Lanka's white-ball cricket team, is poised to take over the captaincy for both T20 and ODI formats, the Daily Mirror learns.

According to a reliable source, the selectors have decided on Asalanka following Wanindu Hasaranga's resignation from T20 captaincy and Kusal Mendis's unsuccessful stint leading the ODI team.

The Sri Lanka squad for the upcoming white-ball series against India has been submitted to the Sports Minister for approval, with Charith Asalanka as the captain. India will tour Sri Lanka from July to August for three T20Is and ODIs each.

Sources said that several senior cricketers who participated in the T20 World Cup in the USA have been omitted, while performers from the Lanka Premier League have been reintroduced into the squad.

Among those excluded from the squad are Dananjaya De Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Angelo Mathews.

Kusal Janith Perera, Dinesh Chandimal, and Avishka Fernando who are among the top run scorers in the ongoing LPL are included in the Sri Lanka T20 squad and the promising all-rounder Chamindu Wickramasinghe is set to make his international debut.

Despite his team, the Dambulla Sixers, being eliminated from the competition, Chamindu showcased exceptional all-round abilities, earning him a place in the national squad.

India has named Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of their men’s T20I team for the Sri Lanka tour with Shubman Gill named as the vice-captain of the T20I and ODI sides.

India's upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka marks the debut assignment for Gautam Gambhir as the team's new coach. Gambhir steps into this role following Rahul Dravid's departure after leading the team to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

This will be the first time since 2021 that India will travel to Sri Lanka for a bilateral series.

A bad choice ! The way asalanka captained the lpl final is proof to show what a donkey he is ! He bowled two overs of donkey drops for 35 runs in this crunch match and gave the other team to get into the match and have a chance ! If he wasn't the captain this would not have happened! These selectors who do not use their brains are stumbling from one mistake to another

Believe it or not, whoever watches this, including the selectors, please take this into account for the sake of Sri Lankan cricket. There should be a ban on players who underperform for the country from joining any Premier League (PL). If they still go ahead and join PL games, they should be banned from the national team for at least a few years and replaced with young talent. This is the only way we can ensure that players give their full effort when they play for the country, rather than just for the money in PL games. Otherwise, these regular changes in the team or captaincy won't make any difference. There should be pressure on players when they play for the country, not a relaxing holiday on hard-earned taxpayers' money, which also disgraces the country with bad attitudes on the pitch and while abroad. This is a personal opinion said out of love for Sri Lankan cricket, with the desire to see a great Sri Lankan cricket team that plays for the country with the same patriotism.

Good to see the appointment of Asalanka as no other option left but very poor decision to include unreliable Kusal P, Chandimal and Avishka in the squad and lpl is a failure as it was mainly played by older and retired players. Ashen Bandara and some new players did not even get a chance. India is going with new players while our selection committee jokers are going with old players. Also it is a joke to go behind Kusal and Chandi as both of them does not offer any balling option either.

Frankly, I feel Duleep Mendis should be the captain.....LOL. I don't understand how people think. From the regular playing 11 a captain should be found. So Charith is the best available choice. When he was appointed as vice captain there were no one to object. So why now. After all the ultimate aim is to have an individual make, right or wrong, decisions on field. It's not about winning matches or trophies.

Just because they scored at LPL matches in Sri Lanka, same old non performed cricketers were selected again. Those cricketers never performed in any International levels at T20 's and One day matches. Very surprisingly again Charith been selected as a Captain of the team, and no logic behind that move. But surprisingly some new guys been selected and most of the time these new guys will be just at the bench watching the matches and then no news of them after that. Anyway way we will awaiting the very interesting series and Wish All the Best to the Team.
